from what i understand, you have to have an original document deed of sale of each and every time the car was sold.
you will have to trace each previous owner...

Nope. Since Open Deed of Sale ("ODS"), yung original owner lang na nakalagay sa CR ang need na nakapirma (plus one valid ID) then the current buyer can sign the ODS at tatanggapin yan ng LTO para malipat registration.

Done that many times already. Walang bumalik na tinanggihan ng LTO. Problem lang dyan talaga is if yung ODS is walang ID (with wet signature) ng orig owner na kasama.

Kaya nga "Open", meaning walang nakalagay at nakapirmang buyer.

Baka hindi pa kayo nakakakita ng ODS?

Bought an old car and im the 6th owner. Open Deed of sale lang hawak ko. Cant locaate the owner anymore, i want to have the open DOS under my name, will it still be possible? Thanks

Pero kahit 6th owner pa siya basta yung ODS eh walang nakalagay na buyer pa, he can then put his name and apply for change of ownership at LTO. That is what an ODS is, open in the sense na blank nakalagay dun sa "Buyer" part including details of who the buyer is. So if may nakalagay jasi na details, then its not an ODS. Deed of Sale na talaga.

But the fact that he knows he is the 6th owner leads me to think that while he may have an ODS from the 5th owner, there are Deeds of Sale for the previous sales already. Which is why I agreed with dr.d's assessment.

What's really important is the first ODS. If its blank as to buyer, then no problem yan. Asikasuhin na lang agad at baka madamay pa sa bagong MC ng LTO. Problema dyan is kung expired na yung ID ng original owner. Baka masilip, and then that is when magic needs to be done.

Ang problema if medyo nabura na ang details sa ODS niya.
If galing pa sa first owner yung ODS at pinagpasa-pasahan lang, din baka ma question by the time i process na transfer of ownership.
Yung ginamit na ID lang talaga, if driver's license at nag expire, need nya talaga hanapin si first owner.
