You can download areas of google maps so that even with weak or no cell signal it should work without a hitch.

you can also use it when you go abroad and download areas of the map of the city you will be staying just in case your internet doesn't work.

yes. you can have an extra SIM, yes you can download off-line maps.

pero iniisip ko lang yung benefits nung may separate GPS ako compared sa ngayon na CarPlay na lang gamit ko.

naalala ko din na yung GPS ko noon will show you a photo of the intersection and tell you which road to take

anyway, past is past... just like the CD player, lahat tayo may CarPlay na and the GPS had to go.

FWIW, there are plug-in Android boxes that streams via the Apple Carplay or Android Auto protocol to convert your factory HU into a full-fledged Android device. These boxes have their own GPS and some can even take a SIM card. In other words, these boxes can potentially work independently from your phone.

My old HU used a Garmin nav module that I had purchased separately. Before that, I used a Garmin Nuvi 255w. I got the local Philippine maps from roadguide(dot)ph way back when. I just checked out the site and it appears that the last Contributors' version of the map for Garmin units was released over 3 years ago.

In the context of daily driving, I can see how dedicated nav units with offline maps can be beneficial, but it is evident that the great majority have embraced online/live maps because it just makes the most sense:

    1. Nav apps are mostly free and far more capable than legacy nav units
    2. Data plans are cheap
    3. Internet connectivity and coverage on 4G/5G have greatly improved since the 2G/3G days

Di ba yung GPS topic dito is yung pwede magamit to track your vehicle if ma carnap?
Or is the question pertains to GPS Maps/Navigation na built-in sa car natin?

    It's more about navigation.

On my head unit and phone I have the OsmAnd app. And in this app I have saved the entire road map of the Philippines and an even more detailed set of maps for Luzon island and Metro Manila (this includes buildings, landmarks, trails, fire roads, traffic lights, stop signs, crosswalks, etc).

There is always a need to have an offline resource for navigation purposes. OsmAnd uses geographic data from the OpenStreetMap project, which provides updated maps for free. One can use these detailed maps without cellphone service or a need to pay data/roaming charges, this includes areas which are off the grid or if there is a massive power outage (like during natural disasters).

The files are also available in Garmin image file format in case you need maps on your watch, bike, golf cart, ATV, etc. For seafaring guys, you might want to check out OpenSeaMap.

Split-screen allows me to view any two maps for online-online or online-offline... for redundancy.

    Waze + Google Maps

Waze + Sygic (Offline - Basic World Lifetime License)

But I've never found a need to do it and most of the time, I just split it between media streaming and Waze

Doesn't hurt to always have redundancies in place especially with technologies that rely on mobile data here in the PH

It's a CarlinKit Tbox Ambient (Android 13). I discussed it here: https://www.tsikot.com/forums/car-au...7/#post3373897 and here: https://www.tsikot.com/forums/scienc...6/#post3377216

It's basically an Android box but instead of sending the A/V signal traditionally via HDMI, it 'streams' an Android tablet experience over the Apple CarPlay protocol to your HU. It's really a clever implementation. So your Apple CarPlay/Android Auto-capable HU is essentially converted into an Android device. It will now run practically any Android app without restriction. This is particularly useful if your radio is hard-integrated with the vehicle and cannot be changed with an aftermarket HU.

    It connects like this...

    HU <-(USB)-> CarlinKit <-(Bluetooth)-> Phone

Everything still works.... steering wheel remote, and I can go back to the factory radio anytime to listen to broadcasts. Phone calls comes through to your HU through CarlinKit. It's got its own GPS (for navigation) and can take in a SIM card so it can work with or without your phone.
