June 2nd, 2013 09:11 PM #632planning to upgrade the HU. Ace Hardware sells a Sony HU with USB and Aux for 3.5k, didn't took note of the model though. will there be leaps and bounds in terms of sound quality compared to my generic one?

according to jhnkvn wala daw improvement sa sound but in my case head unit is one of the better ways to improve sound. A head unit that can get at a higher volume with no distortion is the better head unit regardless of features. I'm sure that the xplod hu can produce better sound than your stock hu but ill get a pioneer hu at the same price range.

The only reason why people usually go for aftermarket head units is because it's way way easier. If you're on stock head unit and it's quite easy to simply swap it out for an aftermarket head unit, by all means do it. It relieves a lot of headaches such as saving yourself the wild FR response of a stock head unit (with some having peaks of +5dBs) or trying to figure out your factory HU DSP filters and settings.
What I mean in my statement in "wala naman masyado improvement in sound" is that most head units measure the same. What you buy them for are their features which, if competing, usually means for their equalizer tuning, time alignment, and other mumbo jumbo stuff.
If somebody keeps on insisting that more expensive head units measure better, I'll throw you Erin's measurements: Why does a 45,000php Pioneer P99RS measure the same as a 20,000php phased-out Pioneer 800PRS? You can't even hear or perceive a THD% increase of 0.1%.. what more of 0.00x%? Don't take the BS about the advantages of a "copper plated chassis" or something.
It's pretty hard to measure higher volume with no distortion. This is because most head units simply throw out 22W RMS regardless of whether it's a 3,000php Pioneer or a 40,000php Pioneer. If your music and driver is demanding 30W of RMS power from you, kahit ano gawin mo, you'll be distorting when all you can do is 22W THD>1%. If you have fixed power and you want to reach a higher volume, get the most sensitive speakers you can find.
There are people who claim that head units sound "cold" or "warm" with some even describing the sounds with flowery words such as "extended highs, deep bass, warm vocals but isn't holographic in imaging". But do you think they can accurately guess which head unit is in a vehicle when they're blindfolded? Ha, I have better chances in playing the Mega Lotto.
This is the reason why I used to joke around people that I should paste a McIntosh sticker sa kotse ko.. just for some magical pixie dust for them to say "woah" and tataas yun sound perception quality nila.. by a lot. And those are all benefits gained from... a sticker.Last edited by jhnkvn; June 3rd, 2013 at 12:50 AM.

I'm not updated sa price, so I'm not the person to consult when it comes to those
I would suggest that since Dominations na subwoofer and amplifier mo, then going for Dominations separates MIGHT save you some cash as dealers usually have promos on "same-name" setups.
