Took a drive around town in the wife's new car (2019 Camry). There were complaints about the 2018 Camry as having a finicky or defective AT transmission characterized by hesitation in acceleration and/or jerky shifting between gears.
I'm still in the breaking in stage which means I haven't exceeded 55 mph or gone above 5000 RPMs.
There was one occasion where I suddenly mashed the gas pedal as I attempted to accelerate from slow speeds and....yeah. There was a hesitation. But, it only happened once. Plus, my 2006 Sonata with 5-speed AT also did it occasionally. Once I mashed the pedal more gradually, no problems. I'm hoping it's just the onboard computer learning my driving habits.

I drove (my) Camry around town, putting on mileage in stop and go traffic and get done with the breaking-in period. As soon as I got done with the break-in, I took it to the freeway and did some high-revs driving.
Previously, I read forum posts (not here) about the acceleration (2018 models) being either dangerously sluggish or riddled with shifting hesitations. I'm happy to say that's not the case with mine. It has more than adequate HP and acceleration for merging into 75/80 mph traffic. I didn't encounter any hesitation or sluggish acceleration in regular automatic mode.
I also used the paddleshifters, testing different RPM ranges for shifting. It's a peppy car that loves to be revved. But, at 203 HP and about ~3400 lbs, there's no way it's going to match the acceleration of my old V6 Sonata which had 235 HP and about the same weight.
With all the high-revving drives I've been doing, the gas mileage readout dropped from a high of 36 MPG combined to 33.4 MPG. That's still way better than the Sonata's 23 MPG.

While I was driving around town, I was also counting mentally every new Camry and Accord I came across. I test drove these two cars (plus the Mazda 6) before making a decision.
From my very unofficial count, there are lots and lots of new Camrys on the streets, including 2 or 3 blue ones that are exactly like mine (SE trim). I lost count somewhere past 15 and that's mostly for the SE/XSE trims. I probably missed counting a lot more of the LE/XLE trims because the front fascia looked very different from the SE/XSE trims. In the same time frame I counted just 6 new Accords.
The MSRP for the base Camry is more than that of the base Accord. Yet, there are tons of Camrys. I'm guessing their owners are thinking like I am. I don't want a turbo and/or a CVT in the hot climate. I prefer a conventional AT and a naturally aspirated engine.
Anyway, I told the family to make sure they know which one is our car because there are several blue ones out there.
