Just for comparison, during the last series of brownouts, I spent something like P300 per day sa gasolina ng 3KVA genset. The unit ran only for about 12 hours a day (during the night only) and only the following electrical items/appliances are turned on - refrigerator, lights, electric fans, tv set, motor pump.
So, this translates roughly to about P9000 per month, vs. my average electric bill of P5000 a month,- with 2 window-type ACs on during the night.

i tried computing for the actual power cost...
based on the last two months of our MERALCO bill, average power rate is around 10 pesos per kwh... kung baga i simply divide the total amount due by total kwh consumed...
then i computed the cost of diesel multiplied by diesel consumption of the engine per hr tapos divided by the power generated by unit (assuming 80% lang ang pwede gamitin dun sa total output)... power rate is roughly 12.50 pesos per kwh.
actually lumalabas talaga na mas mahal ang power generation ng gen set kaysa MERALCO, pero siguro the bigger your consumption, mas magiging matipid ang gen set eh, i heard from some institution na they are using gen set as their power source and they are enjoying quite big savings from it eh.
maximizing the power output of your gen set lang talaga siguro ang pinakamagandang way para sulit yung pagbayad sa fuel cost mo.

I work for a mall in the province. Our generators can provide all the power we need. However, it is still cheaper and less stressful to get power from the local electric cooperative.
To get the true cost of using a generator as the main source of electricity, you have to account for:
Fuel
Oil
Oil anf fuel filter (normally replaced at 250 or 500 running hours depending on brand of generator and model) air filter
Repairs for both engine and generator plus eventual overhaul
Operator - if any
Initial investment and depreciation
Interest expense if any
Stress, headache, unavailability of power in case it breaks down and you can't get power from the local utility

Meron bang power gen.

- an electric fan
- a couple of lamps (say 2-3 philips bulbs, basta may ilaw lang)
- 9 cu. ft. ref
- 21" TV
- or optional (3/4 HP AC)
Noon kasing post Milenyo, ilang araw walang ilaw sa amin. Wala kami generator. Pati pag-recharge ng cellphone, may bayad (neighbor namin may gen. set). Ang pamilya ko, parang bumalik sa pre-historic age. Wala lahat.Sa sobrang init, napilitan silang mag-check in sa 3 star hotel for a couple of days. Di sila makatulog, sa sobrang init!

A 3000VA (or 3KVA) power generator should be okay for this. However, when the (our 1HP) aircon compressor is running, the genset goes high rev to compensate. It is safe though since the genset normally has a built-in circuit breaker.
In my case, (since our genset has the same power output), we don't use the aircon, - just lights, TV, ref, electric fan, et al...
