Sometimes the baggage handlers get tired, some don't care about how much you paid for your luggage. They'd rather save their backs than someone else's luggage. Bags are usually tossed around specially out of the passenger's view.
When I travel to Manila, I sometimes bring tools, materials and other stuff. Knowing how bags are handled, I use cartonite. When I get to the destination I collapse it for future use or rip it apart.
