Ako dati, iniiwan ko lang ng low thermostat yung AC ko pag kumakain kami (mga 30 mins per day). Nung tumaas ang kuryente i tried shutting it off for those 30 minutes. Parang malaki na save ko dahil libo ang binaba nung electric bill namin eh -- and the AC's still working great!

will use of electronic ballasts for flourescent lights save electricity? I was in MC Home Depot today and saw a demo where an ordinary ballast used around 300 milli amps while the electronic ballast only 110 milli amps. Is this real or may daya?

For the same illumination power, a Philips Tornado 20 watt CFL light bulb will give the same amount of light as a 40 watt fluorescent tube light. It's proven in our office when we converted ALL of our 40 watt fluorescent systems to Philips Tornado 20 watt CFL light bulbs.

i read some time ago that painting roofs white will help reduce indoor temps. Have not tried it but kinda makes sense since white rejects heat better than other colors.

Totoo po yan. That's why most poultry/piggery farms have white or light-colored roofs. Yun nga lang, yung surrounding area ang iinit kasi the heat has to go somewhere -- pero meron din kasi nare-reflect paitaas so nababawasan pa din ang total.

Nope. If your device has no stand-by mode, then it doesn't consume any power if off. But if your device has even a tiny LED light to show "power" then it consumes power (just a little bit).

Nope, the act of turning on your A/C only consumes a small spike of power. The problem is you might be stressing the A/C's mechanical parts than you should be. Normally simply adjusting the A/C's thermostat to a comfortable level and turning it off for the last 30 to 60 mins before leaving the room would be enough to save you a lot of watts.

Some A/Cs already have a "double" plug where you can plug in an electric fan so the A/C's built-in timer will turn off the A/C and automatically turn on the electric fan to keep the cool longer with less power.
thanks for the education, for some reason i feel like i just watched an ep of mythbusters....

as a follow up question, these a/cs with double plugs, wouldn't there be a problem with their mechanicals being stressed by the constant on/off?

Generally the A/C timer would only turn off the A/C (and turn on the fan) just once. So if you normally keep the A/C on 6 hours, you can now set the A/C timer to five hours and the last hour, the fan will keep the room cool by circulating the cold air.

did a little experimet this am. hooked up a electronic ballast with a 36 watt FL tube to a clampammeter. Read .16 amps. Removed the FL tube and placed it on a magnetic ballast, .24 amps.

it looks like an electronic ballast will save electricity.

i want to try this with a watt hour meter.

Has anyone tried that gadget that you plug into your socket? I think it's called "Power Saver ___". They usually demo it in Ace Hardware or Handyman. Does it really work?

Parang mga fuel savers sa cars Even though I haven't tried one myself, I highly doubt those products cause if they truly work eh sobrang laganap na yan and word of mouth alone would be enough to spread the news pero they have been out in the market for some time now and I still don't get any recommendations from anyone....
