depends on what they are... NiCD or NiMH? I would assume you are talking about NiMH batteries. Although they last longer, sometimes fast charging and high heat kills them pretty quick.
If you are wondering about cost... maybe you should try keeping track on the number of cycles you have run your batteries through? Assuming one cycle is equivalent to one alkaline battery (in reality, an alkaline battery has less power than the modern NiMH we have now).

I have used Energizer, Sony and GP. Pinaka pangit ang Energizer noong naglabas sila ng 2500mAh NiMH. Now I use Sanyo Eneloop for about 10 months. Tinapon ko na ang other brands na nagamit go.

this kind battery is very practical. most of all for long term use. you just have to recharge it over and over. just don't over charge. it will shorten the life span of the battery.
