gas engines effect the engine brake thru the partial vacuum in the throttle system.
diesel engines do not have such vacuum. they generate engine brake by controlling the fuel delivery.

brake brake versus engine brake...
one speeds up brake pad wear. the other speeds up clutch disk wear..
but if you continually practice jackrabbit engine braking, you'll also speed up tranny and engine wear..

Sorry sa title... nasanay na break kse masarap mag break sa office haha...

Sir Dr. D... question khit po ba downhill or pababa lang ng parking with constant speed will it still cause faster cluth disk wear?
I'm thinking kse na mas nakakatakot ung overheating ng brake kaysa sa pagnipis ng brake pads..

so it means po ba... we can save diesel when using engine brake as against po pag naka nuetral lang tayo?

anything excessive is bad. use engine braking only when you need to. use your brakes only when you need to. drive at the appropriate speed. as long as you do not abuse your car, then normal wear lang ang mangyayari and not excessive wear.

I believe the engine can take more punishment than all the brake pads of your car combined

The only drawback is more fuel burned due to higher rpm when an engine brake is engaged compared to going neutral

You can check for yourself by focusing on the tachometer. Higher rpm means more fuel burned

i remember many years ago...
an extremely hilly resort was using ford fieras as their service vehicles. the driver there said they replace clutch disks once a month..
