sa distributor ang ingay na yan. ganyan din sa akin. yung takatak sa mismong harapan ng driver side galing. kung luma na yung distributor cap nyo its time to change it. isama na nyo palitan ang contact point at condenser.

on the other hand is that a DOHC engine? some 323's have SOHC B6 and others have DOHC. the 323 DOHC B6 engine has hydraulic lash adjusters (a.k.a. lifters) and the typewriter sound is very common. it's only cosmetic (doesn't cause damage or reduce engine performance) but can be annoying.

eagle,
usually mali yng timing nyan sa distributor... or maliit masyado yng gap ng contact point.
DIY ako sa pag-set ng timing ng VW beetle & kombi ng dad ko. pag sakto yng timing (+0, meaning yng piston 1 is at the topmost and yng distributor rotor nakatutok sa spark plug #1) dun lagi naririnig yng takatak sound. i-advance mo na lng ng konti (between +2 to +5) then do a test drive. pag sobra advanced, mawawalan ka naman ng power. pag naka retard naman, hihina hatak ng engine mo (and may cause backfire).
sa contact point, don't know kng ano yng standard gap for mazda. sa VW kc #18 filler ang standard gap.
don't worry, di naman masisira engine mo sa 'takatak' sound. medyo mahina lng yng arangkada o hatak ng engine (from 1,000 rpm to 2,000 rpm) and usually yng maririnig mo yng takatak sound pag nasa 3rd or 4th gear ka & u tried to floor the gas pedal.
HTH.

tune up, adjust tappets, get a higher octane fuel and shift at the appropriate speed.

Tignan mo kung may diaphragm sa ilalim ng distributor malapit sa engine block. Subukan palitan ito sabay tune up. Gumamit ng 95+ octane

that sound maybe as simple as, detonation, pre-ignition, pinging, knocking etc. (tope).. try using a higher octane rating + tune your car correctly (timing, plugs). http://www.carbibles.com/fuel_engine_bible.html
