May 24th, 2018 07:59 AM #143i handbrake first, before i P.
the P position is not designed to carry heavier loads. with sufficient pressure, it can break.
the handbrake is designed to handle pressure. in many cars, when challenged, it will usually slip, but not break.

The parking brakes are not designed to hold pressure but to hold against the wheel rotational torque. The parking brakes use Force to hold.
In some cases, as in the case of a jetliner, the hydraulic pressure is used to apply Force to the brakes to keep the wheels from turning and aircraft break away.
There is a big distinction between Force and pressure

Same. When parking i usually shift to N, engage the handbrake, then shift to P.
At stoplights if i know it will be along wait then i shift to N and lift the hand brake. If i know i'll be stopped for around 20 seconds or less i may opt to just keep the car in D and hold the brake.

i used to kill the my diesel engine also, in long-ish red light, to help conserve fuel.
my trips are "not long".
hayun. my battery died 2 weeks after the 12 month warranty.Last edited by dr. d; May 24th, 2018 at 09:40 AM.
