The overdrive is basically an extra gear meant for better fuel economy on open roads where you can cruise. Generally you can just keep it "on" unless you need to use engine braking (like driving down a long downhill road) or driving with a very heavy load onboard the car.

Google mo bro, dami topics about proper use of the OFF mode in your O/D.
But for me this is how I use O/D on my '05 Altis:
=================================
- Engine brake - kawawa naman kung brake lang parati - 80kph below / 100kph max...above this baka masira transmission.
- Down-shift - if kulang, for overtaking - 80kph below / 100kph max...above this baka masira transmission.
- Uphill - so the transmission will not be confused to shift to 4th gear, 1st, 2nd, 3rd lang sya.
- From a standstill - if you need that extra ompf when you floor the pedal, turning off the O/D gives you that extra ompf. Try it, floor the pedal with ON, you will feel mabagal mag catch-up yng revs and gearing...(one can also turn the ECT Power on agad for immidiate extra power and RPM)
- And of course when you go slow downhill or at the mall parking lots, use the lowest gear as you go down as if you are on 1st gear in a manual. Or 2nd on your A/T for the not so steep descents...that would require 1st-2nd shifting...
