Youre right.
Air Force jets' fly-bys rattle Ortigas offices | Nation, News, The Philippine Star | philstar.com
I saw them yesterday morning while I was on the way to Makati. Somehow they made me a bit proud that we again have jet planes, kahit na trainers muna.

those are F8-H Crusaders bought as 2nd hand in 1977. the planes were retired in the late 60s by the US navy. they bought 35 and they used 10 planes for spares to make 25 planes. meaning they used "surplus" parts to fix "surplus" planes. the F8H purchase was meant to be a stop gap measure as they originally wanted to purchase either 12 F16 or even the F15. the planes were meant to last in service for only 10 years. rumor was the air force officers who recommended the F8-H purchase had sweet deals with Vought. the planes were retired in 1988 as they could no longer source parts and the remaining flying units were damaged by the mt. pinatubo eruption.
so any one who says "buti pa nung panahon ni marcos may 25 na F8 fighters" are badly wrong. 25 obsolete planes whose main armament are 4x20mm guns and kept flying using surplus parts does no make a credible air force.

February 24th, 2016 12:45 PM #423The thing about fighter planes...don't you need to have some sort of control center that handles battle info. -- eg if something violated PH airspace, how many and what type, etc? Do we have one in place already? Or else useless yung tech sa F-15s/16s

February 24th, 2016 12:57 PM #425I can't seem to find any picture of a PAF F-8 with Sidewinders (AIM-9B) apart from display units. There is a picture of a PAF F-5 in the same era sporting a pair though. According to Timawa.net we still have stocks of them and during the AFP Day celebrations the Fa-50s were displayed with them attached.

they have only 1 operating radar station now in san fernando, la union (the old Wallace air station, now named Gozar Air Station) which is also being planned for an upgrade with south korean sourced radar as the present radar has limited range. hopefully the new radar will be a multi-phase array system.
they plan to put up 2 more. 1 in palawan, probably inside one of the EDCA bases and 1 more in pasuguin, ilocos norte.
