in the olden days, fecal material was used as a fertilizer.
it was even shipped "to the colonies" for such.
but fecal material had a dangerous feature.
bacterial action within it, produces explosive methane gas.
pity the poor seaman, who would go down into the hold of the ship carrying this shipment, using an open torch as light source...
KA-BOOM!
and so, as legend goes,
such shipment was stored high on the un-enclosed part the ship, so's the methane gas won't accumulate.
the standard instruction was to "Ship High In Transit".
