Not as fanatic as the fanboys from a certain Korean brand
A little background - was in the same boat as you were roughly two months ago - was looking for new cars for both me and my wife - and we finally settled on the Forester for her (last minute call - we had already placed an order for an Impreza sedan), and a Monty for me...
In the process we checked out practically all cars and SUV's within our price range, and I dredged up old acquaintances working for dealers to try to get some inside info and advice....
But if I were you - if you're really deadset on choosing between the two (Fortuner and Forester), try to hold off several months (Fortuner is primed to get a facelift - its speculation if it'll be major or minor, but the way they're discounting the Forts now makes me think it'll be a major lift, and considering the way they're being walloped by Mitusbishi now....) - and make your decision when the new one comes out. After seeing the two then, you should have no regrets. The Forester also recently got a facelift now btw (but its really minor).
As for me, I'm pretty happy with our Forester (it still hasn't reached its 1600k pms, so i can't say if something'll pop up in the future) - no complaints so far on the handling, ride height, visibility, safety and entertainment features, and power (brought it Subic for some "break-in"...damn). Off roading I have no experience with (not really my thing).

not really like that, it's just the forester is really better than the fortuner in every way except for ride height, the extra 2 seats, fc and resale value. here's my top suv's in the 1.4-1.7M price range:
1. Sorento and FXT
2. santa fe
3. tucson
4. forester 2.0
5. asx
6. cx-7
7. x-trail
8. MS
9. cr-v
10. fortuner
the FXT is my number 1 choice because i love performance, and the FXT is the best when it comes to performance in that price range. the sorento is in par for me with the FXT since it's an overall package it has every thing i would want in an suv but it is better than an FXT as an overall car. fortuner is last because it has a weak engine, still use a drum brake and sobra tagtag, there's still a couple more reasons why the fort is last for me but i don't want to offend anyone so i'll just post those 3. even if it has an upcoming facelift, i seriously doubt it would have the technology that the top 5 cars i posted has. don't believe me, just look at the MS it just did what sta.fe did 2 years ago. since MS and fort are not sold world wide, the technology it has can't compete with the cars being sold world wide. no offense meant to ms and fort owners. but if you live in the province where you'll pass by unpaved roads all the time, then i'll gladly choose the fort or ms.

April 8th, 2011 11:39 AM #807from what i read the 2011 2.0 forester has the same engine but subaru engrs had some fine tuning and that added additional 2HP. not much.
my apprehension now is it seems fxt is overly priced especialy when it's just launched. but then after several months m.i. will offer big discounts and freebies, making a total amount that is the 'true price' logically.Last edited by MICGIL; April 8th, 2011 at 11:40 AM. Reason: incorrect word

April 8th, 2011 11:52 AM #808im hands off when it comes to fxt.its really a great suv.but i can't understand the pricing.
the 2010 fxt is now discounted by atleast 40K plus it comes with several free items.making it almost 100k difference compared to the new facelifted.

the new engine is using a chain driven double overhead cam instead of the belt driven single overhead cam, which gives extra hp, better low end torque and better fc.
the 300k difference between the 2.0 and the FXT is justifiable since the difference in performance is just to huge, also the price of the subaru isn't that far from world wide prices compared to other asian cars which is almost double compared to other countries.
btw what other cars are you considering besides the fxt and fort?
