Hi Forester owner,
My new driver wife wants an upgrade for her car. Her choice is this Forester. But since she's a new driver, Im expecting some bumps and dings. So we decided to get a second hand Forester. Our choice is a '11 Forester 2.0.
Asking for help from you guys,
1) According to our friends who owns a '15 Forester, that its PMS cost more cheaper than their Civic? How true is that?
2) For my wife, the Forester has more "bragging right" compare to other brand. But is it true that resale value of Forester is lower compare to its other competitor?
3) Are parts of the Forester always available?
4) Is owning a '11 Forester easy to maintain. Our current rides are Fortuner, Strada and my wife's second hand Altis.
5) Is the Forester fuel consumption higher to, say, CRV (which my other choice)?
But overall, we can say, that base in our friend's '15 Forester, we are in love with it. May I know from you guys, what are the difference with the 2011 model with the 2015?
Thank you so much for your input. Any suggestion will be appreciated. More power guys!

I got a 2016 Premium a couple of weeks ago and it hasnt breached the mandatory 1K PMS yet. My SA told me that the regular tune up would cost around P5K to P7K (every 10K or evry 6 months, whichever comes first). It is still too early to rely on the mileage but the display is telling me it is between 5 to 8 kmpl city driving.

I have an ancient '99 Civic 1.6 VTi M/T. Its really cheap to maintain because it uses only 4 liters of oil (Php 170/liter * 4 = 680 + oil filter P 350. Total Php 1030.
My '12 Forester 2.0 XS does not even come close bec. I have it serviced at Motor Image Greenhills. And they charge an arm and leg for their period maintenance-LABOR only. I bring my own fully synthetic oil which costs around P500/liter*6 liters (5.2li to exact). If you use the casas's oil the cost will go up even further.
I'm generalizing when I say that vehicles in this segment (CRV, RAV4, Tucson gas, etc...) will have lower resale value because of the gas engine (2.0li is not that fuel efficient vs. lower displacement and will cost more to maintain). The diesel CUV will have better resale value.
I would advise get a true '11-12 Forester. Easily identifiable because it has body colored side mirrors with turn signals, silver painted door handles. The engine on the 2.0 XS is also new (The XT continues to use the same EJ engine). The new 2.0 FB20 engine (also used in '12-present XV, Impreza, Forester) has timing chain (unlike the previous EJ20 which is timing belt) and its more fuel efficient as well.
Subarus in general need more steps in maintenance bec. of the orientation of the engine which is horizontal opposed (vs the run on the mill in-line engines). For example, to access the spark plugs, one needs to remove the air cleaner assembly (depends on model) and etc..
Like any engine, if you take care of it (when driving and performing all the maintenance) then it going to last like the proverbial Toyotas.
The only CRV I can compare my '12 Forester XS is the 2005 CRV (which has the thirsty K20 engine). My unscientific comparison? Well my '12 Forester XS is more fuel efficient than my '06 Fortuner 2.7 VVT-i Gas which in turn is more efficient than the '05 CRV 2.0 K20.
A LOT! You may want to do your own research.
The 2011 was first released during 2008. In 2011, only the Forester 2.0 XS received a new engine (FB20). Both XS and XT received the usual cosmetic upgrades in the same year.
The 2015 was launched in 2013. Its an all new generation (meaning new platform, body shell, body panels, etc..). This model just received a cosmetic upgrades in other markets (I'm not sure if the local distributor has brought in new stocks already). I think this model will be good until 2017. By 2018 an all new body will be launched and the cycle goes on.

March 2nd, 2016 11:55 AM #1740Had the same dilemma and had them both for test drive, chose the Forester with NA engine. But you can't go wrong with either.
Forester - handling, looks, AWD, FLOOD FORDING ABILITY; reliability but fewer shops specializing on maintenance; CBU Japan
CRV - more family oriented (with rear aircon vents); slightly cheaper maintenance; availability of parts; reliability
I'm not sure of the speed differential, but the SAs of Subarus let you floor the pedal during test drive which could mean that they brag about its power. Yung SA ng Honda ibinigay na test drive unit sa akin low fuel pa haha.
Forgot to include that the Forester 2.0 i-L is much more generous compared to its CRV base counterpart, offering rain sensing wipers, automatic headlights, power folding mirrors, front and rear foglight, and tail pipe finishing.
