David and Goliath uli pag nagkatuloy
Pacquiao vs Chavez not a good idea, says analyst
abs-cbnNEWS.com | 03/30/2009 5:56 PM
It’s still a month away from Manny Pacquiao’s superfight with Ricky Hatton yet Top Rank chief Bob Arum has already named another possible opponent for the Filipino boxing superstar.
In a report posted on Sesanta.com, Arum named Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. of Mexico as one of Pacquiao’s possible opponents after the Filipino’s May 2 showdown against Hatton in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Arum is reportedly banking on a “Mexico vs. Philippines” scenario in pitting Pacquiao against Chavez, who successfully defended his World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight title against Luciano Leonel Cuello Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
Chavez is the son and namesake of Mexican boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez, who waged wars against the likes of Oscar de la Hoya, Hector “Macho” Camacho and Pernell Whitaker.
Months earlier, Arum announced the possibility of matching Pacquiao against World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Miguel Cotto.
‘Bad for Pacquiao’
Boxing analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz, meanwhile, said the Pacquiao-Chavez match-up is just “pushing it too far”.
Nathanielsz said Chavez is a different case compared to de la Hoya, whom Pacquiao beat at the 147-pound division.
Unlike de la Hoya, Chavez stands 6-feet tall with a 73-inch reach and weighs 154 pounds.
“Unang-una, masyado malaki si Chavez para kay Pacquiao. Sa height palang malaki, tapos yung reach malaki din. Pati yung bigat ni Chavez masyadong mabigat na ‘yun para kay Manny. We all had our doubts with Manny going up to 147 to face de la Hoya, how can he go up even further to 154?” said the analyst.
Pacquiao stands 5'6” with a 67-inch reach.
Nathanielsz said Pacquiao has nothing much to gain in fighting Chavez.
“Win or lose, this will definitely boost Chavez's career, actually more so if he wins,” he said. -- With a report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News

Baka as early as July daw ready na si Mayweather lumaban. Mukhang interesado si Floyd labanan kung sino mananalo sa Pacman vs. Hitman na laban. Let's wait and see.
Mas ok naman Pacquiao vs. Mayweather kesa sa Pacquiao vs. Chavez. Masyadong matangkad si Chavez para kay Pacman; not a wise choice IMO.

+1 . . .this will be more interesting than a mayweather-pacman or mosley-pacman bout
the problem with today's boxing promoters is that they have made money as the number 1 consideration in setting up boxing matches. . .i think there should be a limit as to how far apart two boxers were in weightclass from their respective last fights. . .and individually, boxers should be limited, too, of how far a weightclass they can fight from their last fight
the chavez-pacman idea is ridiculous

if pacman vs. chavez is ridiculous how about a pacman vs. cotto fight? arum has mentioned this before as a possibility. too much risk for pacman imho.
mayweather should face mosley or cotto. either of the two would be an excellent fight.

It seems that Arum is cooking a Valero vs. Marquez fight, with the winner getting a shot at Pacman... Interesting...
Kahit sino sa dalawa wag lang si Chavez.

have you seen the valero pitalua fight? it's still on youtube (i think)
he demolished pitalua. i was expecting more from the veteran but valero was able to lure him into a slugfest eventually knocking him out.
he is an exciting fighter with a tremendous one punch power however he lacks technique and defense. if the fight with jmm happens today he will thoroughly outboxed. i would like to see him against the likes of humberto soto or even juan guzman before taking on the elite.

Yup, saw that previously. Malakas si Valero pero hilaw pa, I agree with you kulang pa sa technique.
BTW, De la Hoya officially announced his retirement today.
