Marquez stops Diaz to claim lightweight crown

HOUSTON - Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez won the vacant World Boxing Association lightweight title here Saturday with a ninth-round stoppage of US hometown hero Juan Diaz.
Marquez landed two stinging hard rights to Diaz's face in a three-punch combination that sent the American falling face forward to the canvas with 35 seconds remaining in the ninth round.
Diaz rose but seconds later, Marquez followed with a right uppercut to the chin that left Diaz flat on his back as referee Rafael Ramos waved an end to the fight after two minutes and 40 seconds of the ninth round.
"We came to work. We came to punch. We came to fight. We threw a lot of punches and that's what we wanted," Marquez said. "We saw the punches were making him tender to the body. Fortunately the knockout came."
Marquez, 35, rose to 50-4 with one draw with his 37th victory inside the distance while Diaz, 25, fell to 34-2.
"I got caught with a good punch," Diaz said. "I kept fighting my heart out. I kept pushing forward. I thought I was doing good. I kept punching forward. He caught me with a good punch."
The WBA throne was vacated two weeks ago by American Nate Campbell when he failed to make weight for his fight against South African Ali Funeka. Campbell then beat Funeka to keep him from claiming the crown.
Marquez had hoped to lure Philippines star Manny Pacquiao into a third fight after fighting the Filipino legend to a draw in 2004 and a split-decision loss last year, but said after the victory he had given up on those hopes.
Now he wants to lure unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jnr out of retirement.
"We're going up to meet Mayweather for the best pound-for-pound," Marquez said. "He says he's the best pound-for-pound, Pacquiao, but he doesn't want to fight me. So I'm going to fight Mayweather."
Marquez and Diaz traded furious punches from the opening seconds, with Diaz staggering Marquez midway into the second round but the Mexican veteran keeping his composure and fighting through the threat.
Diaz opened a cut above Marquez's right eye in the fifth round and looked to be wearing down the elder veteran.
"He threw a lot of punches but with my head movement and body movement, we were picking off a lot of those punches," Marquez said.
But Marquez responded by opening a gash above Diaz's right eye with a left uppercut and stunning the younger fighter with a left hook 40 seconds anbefore the end of the eighth round, setting the stage for the finish.
"That blood was in my eye. It was bothering me. I couldn't really see the punches Marquez was throwing at me," Diaz said.
"My aggressive instincts took over. If I showed him I was hurt, he was going to go for it, so I said the hell with it."
Diaz failed to reclaim the title he lost to Campbell in a split decision last March.

i really wanted to see Pacquiao-Marquez bout again. Kaya lang wala pa talagang hatak sa pera yung match na yan kya di kinakagat ng promoters for now. For me, di pa talagang solid na conclusion on who's the winner in their previous matches. I am not convinced on Pacman's win that time.
I can see na "big brawl" ang mangyayari kasi iba ang driving force ni JMM to win over Pacman. At parehong malaki ang puso at pride nung dalawa na di susuko hanggat kaya.
