December 27th, 2013 09:53 AM #2205Cotto: I Have Decided, I Want Sergio Martinez on 6/7

Former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs) has officially revealed that he wants to fight WBC middleweight king Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs) on June 7th at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Right now, Cotto is waiting for the deal to get finalized with Martinez and his promoter, Lou DiBella.
Cotto had a $10 million dollar offer on the table to face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on March 8th, but the Puerto Rican star was unable to make the date and feels confident that a fight with Canelo will happen somewhere down the line.
During a holiday conference with the Puerto Rican press at the Caribe Hilton Hotel, Cotto said the following:
"I want to go with Martinez. The title is the main goal. We are only waiting on the confirmations from his team and if all goes well the fight will happen. The date is June 7 and I would rather fight where my historical roots are, Madison Square Garden. I believe that the fight with Canelo is premature right now. He is 23 years old and his name will be around," Cotto said.
There has been no confirmation on the weight, but Cotto is not worried about the size of Martinez.
"If you look at the physicality of Martinez. He has never been a full 160-pounder. He's always weighed in at 157 and 158 pounds. Rarely does he every come in at 160. So he's not a real middleweight," Cotto said.
Additionally, Martinez has to tie up a big loose end with a mandatory defense being owed to Marco Antonio Rubio. The WBC ordered Martinez to face Rubio next, and Cotto is not going to get involved in that situation.
"That is something that Sampson [Lewkowicz] and Lou DiBella have to solve. They are working on that," Cotto said.
Cotto would be trained by Freddie Roach for the fight. Martinez has been inactive since an April decision win over Martin Murray, where the Argentine star suffered several injuries during the fight.

MANILA, Philippines – “I think Floyd really loves me contrary to what many believe.”
This was Manny Pacquiao’s response to Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s series of social media posts which were meant to make fun of the Filipino boxer.
In an interview with Philboxing’s Eddie Alinea, the fighting congressman said he was actually flattered by Mayweather’s internet posts because the controversial boxer actually took some time and effort to produce such memes and parodies.
“Honestly, I would like to thank him for always remembering me. Haven’t you noticed, every time he talks, he talks about me,” said the 35-year-old eight-division former world champion.
The boxing scene would become boxing without these controversies, said Pacquiao.
Other people would be insulted if they were in the Filipino boxer’s place, but not Pacquiao.
“Para sa akin, okay lang for him to make fun of me. Hindi naman niya sinasabing masama akong tao. Na mamatay ako o magnanakaw,” he said.
“Maybe, for him, life without me would be sadder than sad, as a line in one of our favorite songs connotes.”
Pacquiao is also thankful for his fans who defended him by coming out with their own memes. His boxing coach, Freddie Roach, is just one of those many people who reacted against Mayweather’s posts.
“People are telling me, marami daw nagagalit sa Twitter sa mga pinagsasabi niya," he said. “Well and good because that will make him realize na maraming magtatanggol sa akin sa mga sinasabi n’ya.”
Pacquiao and his camp have repeatedly reached out to Mayweather to arrange their super fight.
The American boxer, however, has come up with a gamut of reasons not to fight the Filipino superstar.
Pacquiao said he has no other choice but to just pray for his rival.
“As I have been saying from the very first time that he poked fun on me, I’ll just pray for him. Pray that God spares him from any career-ending injury so he may continue practicing our profession,” he said.
“Floyd is pound-for-pound’s best in the world today and I acknowledge that, Whatever [bad] happens to him will make the entire sports world sad.”

December 30th, 2013 09:59 AM #2208Boom-Boom to make comeback
AFTER calling it a career, Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista has rethought his decision of hanging it up and will return to the ring in 2014, less than a year after his retirement.
“It was Boom-Boom’s decision. I have talked to him and he said he wants to make a comeback at 130 pounds, which he feels is his confident weight. He had to suffer bringing down his weight at 126 pounds,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu.
Bautista decided to end his career two months shy of his 27th birthday after a tough split decision loss to Mexican Jose Ramirez last April 20 in Davao City. Bautista was dropped once and was rocked a couple of times in that fight.
Despite Bautista’s earlier decision of ending his career, ALA Promotions and his ALA Gym family still support the Boholano banger’s decision all the way.
“We told him that ALA Promotions will always be here to support him. He is very focused about resuming his career and said that he is ready and he is more mature now mentally and emotionally,” said Aldeguer.
“We will support Rey’s plans for a comeback like any of our other fighters,” said ALA Gym head trainer Edito Villamor.
Bautista kept himself busy in his life outside the ring. He taught boxing to the Philippine Air Force cadets and also in the ALA Boxing Fitness Gym.
“Yes, he still has it. He is still 27 years old. He didn’t leave his jogging and he was with ALA Boxing Fitness in Minglanilla. By the time he returns to the gym for training he will be ready and will easily adjust,” said Villamor.
Bautista made a name for himself as one of the most promising and exciting Filipino fighters in the middle of the last decade. He was once regarded as the successor of Manny Pacquiao. After earning a world title shot following a unanimous decision win over erstwhile unbeaten Sergio Manuel Medina, it looked as if Bautista was on his way to stardom.
However, his career went in a different direction after he got knocked out in the first round by then World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight king Daniel Ponce de Leon in 2007.
