‘Super athletic’ rookie Justin Melton wows San Mig Coffee stars in first practice
    Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Monday, November 11, 2013 · 5:58 pm

The recent Governors’ Cup champion San Mig Coffee Mixers finally convened for their first full practice session on Monday.

And while everyone was looking ahead to the entry of second overall pick Ian Sangalang, it was the team’s second round pick Justin Melton who stole the show, wowing the veteran stars of the Mixers.

“Hustle at saka ang taas niya tumalon,” San Mig Coffee superstar James Yap said in an exclusive interview. “Capable siya of defending. Malaking tulong yun kasi defense ang nakapagpa-champion sa amin.”

Melton, the 13th overall pick in the draft, tested as the most athletic player among draft applicants, and he showcased that athleticism immediately for his new teammates.

“Sobrang aggressive niya and mabilis, sobrang taas tumalon. Gusto ko siya,” said Marc Pingris.

“Sa ngayon pa lang nakikita mo na maganda na yung laro niya, paano pa kapag naturuan. Kapag nabigyan ito ng playing time, lalabas yung laro niya.”

Though measured at just 5-foot-9 in socks, Melton finished with several rim-rattling slams during practice. His energy was also on display on defense.

“He’s super athletic,” said veteran forward Joe Devance. “It looks like he could fit well with the team.”

San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone, who compared Melton to Talk ‘N Text star Jayson Castro after the draft, was happy with the rookie’s performance.

“He does everything well,” said Cone. “He shoots well, he goes to the basket. He defends well and he’s a very quiet young man.”

So who's in and who's out..

Who?s in, who?s out: A quick look at the PBA Philippine Cup rosters | InterAKTV

Eric Menk and Leo Avenido are back in.

Danny Seigle and Danny Ildefonso are out — for now.

Menk and Avenido, who were teammates last season with the San Miguel Beermen in the ASEAN Basketball League, are back in the PBA. Menk joined the GlobalPort Batang Pier while Avenido is a member of the Alaska Aces, according to team lineups submitted this week.

Seigle, who didn’t agree to terms on a new contract with Barako Bull in the offseason, is still seeking a new home. His old frontcourt partner Ildefonso, curiously, is still unsigned by Petron despite the two-time Most Valuable Player’s role in the development of emerging star center June Mar Fajardo.

Another former teammate of Seigle and Ildefonso, Nic Belasco, is no longer on a team roster after spending last season with Alaska.

The Boosters submitted just 12 names to the PBA, but can still make changes to their lineup 24 hours before their first game.

Another former MVP, Kelly Williams, is back in harness for the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters after missing the last two conferences last season while he sought treatment abroad for his injury.

    Batang Pier get younger

Among the 10 teams, GlobalPort has the most number of rookies in its active lineup with five — Terrence Romeo, RR Garcia, Justin Chua, Nico Salva, and LA Revilla. A sixth rookie, Jopher Custodio, is on injured/reserve.

San Mig Coffee has the second most rookies signed up, led by second overall pick Ian Sangalang.

Fellow first round pick Isaac Holstein, second rounder Justin Melton, and third rounder JR Cawaling are also part of the Mixers lineup.

Rain or Shine has already signed up rookies Jeric Teng and Alex Nuyles, but the team has yet to include third overall pick Raymond Almazan in the lineup. The 6-foot-8 beanpole is still seeing action for the Letran Knights in the NCAA finals.

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel has top pick Greg Slaughter and No. 4 selection James Forrester in its lineup.

Talk ‘N Text signed Cebuano playground legend Eloy Poligrates, who is part of the Tropang Texters lineup, while another rookie Robby Celiz is on injured/reserve.

Rookies Ryan Buenafe and Ping Exciminiano made it to the Alaska lineup. Barako Bull, which traded away all its first round picks in the draft, has rookie point guard Jeric Fortuna on its roster. Another neophyte, Carlo Lastimosa, is on injured/reserve.

Eric Camson is the lone rookie on the Air 21 Express to open the season.

Neither Meralco nor Petron has a rookie in its roster.

    Coaching carousel

Bong Ramos remained head coach of Barako Bull, but coaching consultant Rajko Toroman, who called the shots for the team for the last two conferences last season, is gone.

Joining Ramos’ staff is veteran assistant Koy Banal, who moves over from Petron.

GlobalPort’s youth movement carried on to its coaching staff, with Richie Ticzon taking the reins from veteran Junel Baculi.

Sangalang turns down three-year offer, signs two-year deal with San Mig Coffee

FORMER NCAA Most Valuable Player Ian Sangalang turned down San Mig Coffee’s original three-year rookie maximum deal, opting to sign up with the Mixers for a shorter two-year contract on Thursday afternoon at the San Miguel head office in Pasig.

Danny Espiritu, who represents the 6-foot-5 Sangalang explained that the two-year deal, worth P4.5 million, excludes bonuses and other perks after being selected as this year’s second overall pick in the Annual Rookie Draft.

The famed player agent said his ward’s decision to get the shorter contract deal was a “personal choice.”

By the end of Sangalang’s second year with San Mig, the 21-year-old native of Pampanga is eligible to receive the veteran maximum monthly pay of P420,000.

Sangalang played his first preseason game with San Mig on Thursday morning, contributing eight points in the Mixers’ 92-89 win over the Globalport Batang Pier at the Ronac gym in San Juan.

The former San Sebastian center, part of the Stags’ famed “Pinatubo Trio” with Alaska’s Calvin Abueva and Gilas cadet guard Ronald Pascual, is expected to play a solid role for the Mixers this season as he gets more accustomed to coach Tim Cone’s triangle offense.

Sangalang also won the Best Player of the Conference plum with NLEX after helping the Road Warriors to the 2012-2013 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup championship.
