January 21st, 2020 11:51 AM #681Counter-intuitive kasi. Listen to the Talisay Vice-Mayor when he says water will stop the eruption (fire+water di ba?). But in reality, water actually makes the eruptions more hazardous. I agree though the analogy could be better. But in front of cameras and a live audience when you have only seconds to think and reporters looking for a good sound bite...

Happy we got that out of the way. I am not insuanating that Philvocs is incompetent. It's just that to give an appearance of more credence they have to play the media or communication game.
I am pro-Philvocs here ha. Hope that is clear enough with all the ash fall and fart of OB.

Philvocs really need a communication expert to bring their message across. Someone tag can break down the scientific terms being used and explain everything in simple manner.
Wala eh hinde talaga maintindihan.

That is not PHIVOLCS' job, that is the job of the LGU and the DILG and the PCOO.
We tend to NOT vote for the smartest candidates these days, and vote on those who have appeal to the masses instead or are entrenched oligarchies. This results in local government officials with a science aptitude way below that of an average high school student in the EU.
Case in point: the Mayor of Tacloban during Yolanda, Alfred Romualdez, brought his family to a beach resort where the strongest typhoon in recorded history was about to make landfall. Imagine how many lives could have been saved had he ordered a mandatory evacuation instead.

Unfortunately you using the word "credence" just reinforces my impression. But thanks for standing up for the agency.

The DILG is on the same page. It's the local LGU officials (i.e. Cong. Tolentino of Tagaytay, Tanauan Vice-Mayor, Talisay Mayor) who are not.
And if these LGU officials do not even listen to the DILG then they probably won't let a bunch of brown made-in-the-Philippines nerdy scientists tell them what to do.

Only 8 barangays in Tolentiono's turf are barred from reopening their business establishments... Those that fall under "voluntary evacuation" are allowed to open at the discretion of the LGU(Mayor). Iba talaga ang appeal ni Sen. Beautiful eyes...
DILG: Only 8 Tagaytay barangays covered by mandatory evacuation - News - DILG
"Let me clarify that it's not the entire Tagaytay City but only 8 of its barangays were included by PHIVOLCS as within the Danger Zone, so business establishments may reopen in other areas of the city," he said.
He also clarified that as to these eight barangays, those located in the higher portion of the ridge may be allowed to reopen subject to the sound judgment of the Local Government of Tagaytay.
"Secretary Año has decided that those located in the higher portion of the ridge which based on the PHIVOLCS hazard map have low risk may be allowed to reopen by the Local Government Unit. So, it's subject to the discretion of the Mayor and she will be totally responsible," he said.
