I would take a look at the available Korean brands in the market, particularly LG. It's cheaper and has better quality. Panasonic has sold majority shares of their consumer appliances business to Sharp way back in 2007. So Panasonic is not like it was. National (formerly Matsushita electric industrial corp ltd) decided to leave the consumer appliances business to diversify into other tech products in automotive and avionics.

If you have no confidence in Korean brands, you may be better off buying Sharp appliances.

Sadly, our two year old Samsung Digital Inverter ref just went on the fritz and lost cooling.

Our Panasonic is still in perfect condition. It's a really good brand.

Year-old Samsung inverter ref still doing ok. It's plugged into a power on delay to protect against brownouts.

Aside from a power delay, a voltage regulator would be good. AFAIK, our energy supply drop/surges (especially if you're in a province with a really terrible power shortage) are the real appliance killers.
