Race 3 sees new winners, record run

Edward Pujol of VanniTec-Staging Lanes now holds the Fastest SOHC Honda record at 12.39 * 114.70 in his turbocharged white Civic VTi hatchback. Classic Redneck Racing Boyz Chuck Smith (center) and Charlie Martin (left), with partner Fred Smith, dominated the V8 Showdown * Sundown with their second-generation white and yellow Chevy Camaros

Tiu, overall champion for second time

MORE than 60 cars participated in Race 3 of the Angeles Hot Rod Association and PDRF X-Drags Series held last Feb. 10, 2007 at Clark Omni. The dusk-to-dawn drag races had more variety in the winner’s circle and a record run. However, Jonathan Tiu, 2006 Sportsman Pro Driver of the Year and Fastest Mitsubishi 10.43 record holder, made his presence felt again. He duplicated his Race 2 achievements by winning both the S/Pro and Battle of the Champions (BoC) titles.

Tiu’s ’99 Mitsubishi Evolution V was fast and as loud as he was humble, running consistent 10-second blasts from qualifying to the final round of the BoC.

During the S/Pro class elimination, 2006 Hot Street Driver of the Year Tristan Joseph Pangilinan (12.39 * 114.70) took the 12-second division from ERE’s Anthony Go, VanniTec’s Ed Pujol and movie star Allen Dizon.

Bolt-on’s Mike dela Cruz (13.99 * 96.54) prevailed in the 13-second division runs over Michael Tio, Jun Guevarra, John Rizya (Blown Crazy Camaro) and Alvin Gorayeb (Jeepster).

In the semi-finals, Mike dela Cruz lost to lone 11-second division runner Marvin Suzara (11.98 * 115.60). Tiu, the only 10-second contestant defeated TJ Pangilinan for a final round victory against ERE teammate Suzara.

In the BoC clashes, Tiu, on a bye, waited for Hot Street champ Andrew Manio to edge out Street Stock champ Marc Santos on a red light. But Manio also left too early and easily gave the win to Tiu, who posted a best of 10.60 * 120.20; 10.65, 10.84 and 10.96.

JCT improved his standings by adding 250 to his previous 340 for a total of 590 points, making him the points leader.

Pujol bags Top 16, posts 12.39 SOHC mark

Edward Pujol, who missed Race 2, shared the spotlight in AHRA-PDRF’s Race 3
when he won the Top 16 races and notched his first record run with his turbocharged VTi-engined Civic hatchback

Pujol, VanniTec-Staging Lane top bet during Race 3, was determined to win even after being knocked off twice by Allen Dizon in the Muscle Cars Shootouts (MCS) and by TJ Pangilinan in the Sportsman Pro eliminations. (Ed was Race One’s MCS champion). Luckily for him, AHRA started giving “buy-back” runs last Race 2. He actually bought himself back in contention three times in the Early Birds races and posted 12.42 * 109, 12.51, 12.56 and a 12.54 in the Sporstman Pro clashes!

During the Top 16 elimination, Ed Pujol (on a 12.49) lost to TJ in Round One. Bought himself back to the second round and beat Anthony Go. The semi-final round victory against ERE’s Jonathan Young became a dream come true for Ed when his 12.39 officially shattered When-when Dagondon, his teammate’s 12.707 * 108.96 record. He not only grabbed the Fastest SOHC (single overhead cam) Honda record at 12.39 * 114.70 mph but took the Top 16 title as well from TJ Pangilinan, who suffered mechanical woes in their final round appearance.

Ed Pujol’s participation in the S/Pro and Early Birds races, including his Top 16 class win earned him 140 points with another 100 for his record run. He now has 370 accumulated points from Race 1 and 3.

Classic Redneck Racing boyz bag V8 Showdown

Chuck Smith (pictured above right, in the middle) of Classic Redneck Racing team proved himself better on the Christmas Tree by always running closer to his dial-ins during the V8 Showdown * Sundown. He placed second to John Rizya last race but came out victorious, with a wide grin in Race 3.

Round One saw him (on a 15.25 index in his white Camaro) beat Steve Caldwell’s 12.30 (blue Camaro). Chuck’s partner Charlie Martin (pictured at left together with another partner Fred Smith), however lost to Steve’s teammate and Garage Power’s main man John Rizya (Thunder Camaro * 11.70). But Charlie was right back in contention after winning against Caldwell on a second-chance run.

In Round 2, Chuck , with a close to 4-second head start, again won against Round One bye-runner Tom Mewes (black Nova), who broke out of his 11.68 dial-in while his teammate Charlie eliminated John Rizya paving the way for their final round match.

Chuck Smith once again proved one doesn’t need a fast car to win a championship race. Its all about going rounds and ending up good on the Tree, he said, after learning Charlie broke out of his dial-in, too!

Marvin Suzara outguns TJ in ‘Shootouts’

One of the most popular cars in contention is the orange JCT Civic hatchback driven by Marvin Suzara, former Fastest All-Motor Honda record holder at 11.248. He also holds the Fastest All-Motor record in Davao at 11.231.
In Race 3’s Muscle Cars Shootouts, Marvin used his experience from the Sportsman Pro competitions to cut great lights and run as close if not right on his dial-ins.

In Round 1, Marvin (12.22) defeated Marc Santos (16.58), Mike Simbulan (17.39) in the second round with a 12.09 and Charlie Martin (13.08) with a 12.20 pass.

TJ Pangilinan, before meeting Suzara in the final round knocked out Anthony Go, Mike dela Cruz and Allen Dizon. Ednell Heshan also lost to TJ in the semi-final as third placer.

Suzara, on a 12.10 * 113.20 final lap, stopped the winning streak of TJ, who managed a 12.31 * 114.90. Marvin added 180 to his previous 120 for a total of 300 points. TJ increased his 345 points cushion with another180, two runner-up finishes included, for a total of 525.

Manio grabs Hot Street win from Heshan

Andrew Manio of Tarlac Speed, like Race 2 champion Julian McKeough, spoiled Hot Street points leader Edhel Heshan’s chance for another title win.

Manio’s Toyota Jeepster impressively took him to victory lane unleashing consistent low 14 second passes against CabSpeed’s Paolo Baguisa (15.70), Marvin Suzara (Sprinter S2000 * 14.48) and Andrei Santos (15.76).
In the semi-final round, Ednell took a bye run while Andrew whipped Andrei Santos (15.76) with his 14.15. Santos took the third spot..

Runner-up Heshan beat Clint del Rosario (16.19) with his 15.01 and Baguio City racer Jeremiah Datu (15.52) before facing Manio in the final round.

Andrew Manio was a few tenths away from landing in the S/Pro class with his winning pass at 14.06 * 90.75 mph. Ednell finally left the 15s with a 14.86 * 95.64 breakout run.

Valenzuela racer shine in Street Stock

No one expected Marc Santos of Valenzuela City to win. He was not even racing a Civic but a D2H Racing ’96 Corolla (16.44 * 82.27) but he was like a glow in the dark in Race 3. Crowd favorites were, of course, 2006 Street Stock Driver of the Year Jeanette Go and points chaser Mike Simbulan of Tarlac Speed.
Jeanette, at 16.35 * 83.91, took the first round from Andrew Infante (16.64 * 84.14) but was booted out by Mike Simbulan (17.34) in the second round.

In the semis, Santos dispatched Albert Tan (16.20 * 81.58) while Simbulan (with a 17.28) stopped San Jacinto Auto Group’s Carl Gonzalo (19.62 * 70.30). Battle for third place went to SJAG’s Gonzalo.

Marc Santos earned 100 points for his first ever class title win. Mike Simbulan settled for the second spot. But like Chuck Smith, he ‘s getting better on the Tree. And, maybe someday, Mike might follow the footsteps of teammate Andrew Manio.
