Russian officials are struggling to get their story straight on Wednesday’s bombing of a Ukrainian maternity hospital that, according to Ukrainian authorities, left at least three dead—including a child—and 17 wounded. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters in the immediate aftermath of the strike on Wednesday that “Russian forces do not fire on civilian targets.” On Thursday he told reporters that the Kremlin would look into the incident “because you and I don’t have clear information about what happened there.” Following a meeting with Ukraine’s foreign minister in Turkey on Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov took a different stance as he claimed without evidence that the hospital in Mariupol was a warranted target because the building had been “seized long ago” by Ukrainian militia who had “expelled” all patients and doctors there. That narrative flies in the face of images of bloodied pregnant women being evacuated from the scene.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday that the attack was “proof that the genocide of Ukrainians is taking place” and an “atrocity.” Lavrov during Thursday’s press conference dismissed the accusation as “pathetic shouting about so-called atrocities by the Russian armed forces,” as Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova likewise cried fake news. “This is information terrorism,” she said of Ukraine’s claim, according to Reuters. “Like always, they lie confidently,” Zelenskyy said in a televised address.

It’s not the first time Russia has targeted hospitals nor denied responsibility for doing so. In Syria, Physicians for Human Rights corroborated 492 attacks on healthcare facilities and 847 deaths of medical personnel between March 2011 and December 2017—more than 90% of which were carried out by Russian and Syrian forces; an investigation by the New York Times in October 2019 also tied Russian pilots to bombings of four Syrian hospitals that took place within a 12-hour period months earlier. Russia has dismissed such findings as “figments of the imagination,” per the Wall Street Journal.

Becaust of the bad things NATO did before, let's talk about that and not the atrocities Russia is doing now. Is that your line of thinking uls? Let's not condemn it. Tutal ginawa naman ng iba dati. Let's talk about the bad things that happened in the past while people are dying now? Nobody is refuting what other atrocities other countries did in the past but you don't seem too keen on condemning what Russia is doing right now. I don't understand.

I get what Uls is saying. Russia needs to be accountable for its atrocities in Ukraine. It gets all the sanctions and condemnation from the world.

However, the US and its allies never did get sanctioned for all its actions against humanity. The Iraqi and Afghan civilians who suffered gravely with no condemnation whatsoever against the US and its Allies. The world just let them suffer. Do we just turn a blind eye and say “hey, they’re the good guys. It’s ok for them to just bomb these people to thy kingdom come.”

World geopolitics is never fair nor just. It is all guided by interests of who’s in power. Nobody is a good guy. Everyone just have their own agenda. Bully those who don’t align with your policies.

If the US and its Allies are so emboldened to thwart Russia, why have they left Ukraine to rot? Because they are afraid the war will be brought to them. Most of such countries would rather have one country suffer than shaking the security of their borders. The West have failed Ukraine and they are washing their hands clean. Russia is the bad guy and they want the whole world to know.
