yes, govt and environmentalist can show us alternatives
but people will not turn to alternatives unless there's an economic incentive to do so
when oil price skyrocketted in 2008, LPG conversion became hot
when oil price fell in 2009, LPG conversion went cold
now that oil price is rising again, LPG conversion is picking up again
market forces drive people's decisions. not the govt or environmentalists
govt and environmentalists can push alt energy all they want, but when oil price is low, they'll just be ignored
when oil price is high, they don't even have to push alt energy
consumers will demand alt energy all by themselvesLast edited by uls; March 4th, 2011 at 05:59 PM.

You're playing semantics.
Your contention is that the people by themselves and market forces will find the alternatives.
My point is its mainly the environmentalists (whom you deride so much) that explore alternatives first and when an energy crisis hits, the people pay attention to these alternatives and then market forces follow.
Case in point: hybrid and electric vehicles. Who's exploring these two alternatives now? People themselves? Market forces?

hybrids and electric vehicles are underpowered to justify its price...
not to mention its survivability against floods(if ever it survives)
unless...
1. ultracapacitors(alternative to batteries) become dead cheap with supply to back it up
2. we have nuclear reactors
3. they become cheaper and more efficient to run and own vs. fossil fuelsDamn, son! Where'd you find this?

Siguradong mas dadami pa ang mga naka motor at dadami rin aksidente dahil luluwag kalsada dahil maraming mga private car ang hindi lalakad kung hindi importante pupuntahan.

LPG conversion here in the Philippines
that's my example of commercially successful alt energy that didnt need any help from the govt and environmentalists
i don't recall the govt pushing autogas as fuel for cars before the oil price spike in 2008. i don't recall environmentalists pushing autogas as fuel for cars before the oil price spike in 2008
what i recall is that it started with taxis. taxi operators, in search of lower operating cost/higher profits, converted their taxis to run on autogas
people started converting private cars when oil price went parabolic in 2008
investors put up conversion shops. others put up refilling stations. demand was growing. there was money to be made. that's market forces.
that was all private. no govt. no environmentalists
the motivation was purely money. to save money, to make money
the motivation wasnt to be environment friendly
point is, people are not motivated to use alt energy to be environment friendly. people use alt energy when it makes economic sense
people are always motivated by self interest first. everything else (greater good, public interest) comes in second. that's human nature
people who invest in alt energy R&D are betting that their investments will pay off, not coz they wanna be environment friendly
automakers spent tons of money on R&D and building EVs and hybrids primarily to make money, not primarily to be environment friendly
automakers are betting oil will run out in the future and people will need transportation that doesnt run on oil
it's always about moneyLast edited by uls; March 4th, 2011 at 10:59 PM.

they have to make enough money now to pay for the higher priced new orders
--
your cost is P100 and you're selling at P110
but your supplier raised his price to P110. if you dont raise your selling price to P120, and you buy new stock at P110, your P10 profit vanished
to maintain your P10 profit, you have to raise your selling price to P120 even if you bought the old stock at P100 so when you buy the new stock at P110, you still maintain your P10 profitLast edited by uls; March 4th, 2011 at 11:11 PM.
