So I remembered two years ago, I asked for forgiveness to my kids. Take note that I didn't apologize nor simply said sorry. I used the word "forgive". To apologize is that you present yourself at equal footing to the other party but to ask for forgiveness is totally different. You go below your station and humbly enough, face the other at his mercy and ask for forgiveness. The next thing I did is ask them this, "How can I improve as a father?" This was the time that I told them to tell me "everything" that they ever want to and all things that they can remember that I have hurt them in any way. I gave them my word that I'll never talk back and I'll do nothing except to listen to them. I'm so hurt and so ashamed but I kept my promise.

Last February this year, my wife, in teary eyes, said that never have I apologized to her. I got the shock of my life. Never have I realized how selfish I am!

And so these are SOME of the reasons why I have failed miserably as a husband and at the same time as a father.

This I guess, I should stop. I can no longer afford to be more than a jerk.

Ok yan sir...as husband medyo sablay din ako pero who isnt, as a father im pretty close to my daugther, she considers me her best friend, all of her activities, lagi kaming mag ka buntot, from her practices and competitions, my wife cannot keep up with us, tomorrow we'll be a BGC, watching the worlds strongest man competition....

I don’t see you failing your family as a father and a husband. If you told me you left them high and dry, I would say yes.

But you have shown them love and your humanity by your willingness to own up to your shortcomings and improve.

A lot of families would love to have a father like that.

How I hope that my sons see it this way like you. So I've heard,

"When a son started thinking that his father is right, he now has a son who thinks he is wrong."

Funny thing is, I was and I am like that to my father...

How I wish my two grown-up kids will treat me as their best friend. This is something I have to work out.
