    MITSUBISHI MONTERO UNSAFE!!!

Hi All, I went to Citimotors Alabang today to follow up on the repair of our Montero which is fully covered by their in-house insurance. Anyway, again its a 2012 Mitsubishi Montero GLS-V automatic. Early this morning someone chatted with me and asked if its true that in MonTeros, you can shift from P to D or R without stepping on the brake pedal. I said I will verify this with Citimotors. And to my amazement, it is TRUE! I never tried to do this because in all our automatic cars especially the Honda Accord 2002, one cannot shift from P to D or R without stepping on the brake. well, the engineer even showed me without even sitting on the driver's seat that in 2012 models and below, you can shift from P to any mode! Wow they didnt have this safety feature only after 2012. 2013 and up have this already. This is a bloody error prone car! If and If there wll be stupid drivers driving Monteros. Therefore, Mitsubishi should recall all 2012 and below Monteros asap and install this safety feature. Should we and our government let these KILLER CARS roam the streets???

Applicable ba dito yung kasabihan na "nahuhuli talaga ang isda sa bibig"?

Meron ba ibang sasakyan (of different manufacturer) na nag-claim ng same problem?

It's obvious that this deo stepped on the accelerator na based on his statement but we all have to be cautious too specially for owners of 2009 to 2012 without the brake feature.

Clearly. It's a human error now but it may or will happen again as most AT drivers are used to stepping on the brakes before shifting but somehow manage to press the accelerator maybe their mind is elsewhere - eto ang problema their mind is elsewhere like for example the driver bought something in Megamall preoccupied, and after starting the car , you or your loved one is walking in front of that human error waiting to happen

The question is why did Mitsu only install the brake feature as the common norm as other AT cars on the 2013 models above . They should recall all 2012 below models and install this na Lang as a safety and preemptive measure na din for future preoccupied AT drivers that are used to stepping o. Pedals before shifting

And most drivers assume that all ATs are created equal and do not read the owner's manual

because changing a design is a voluntary act ?
if it were required by law, it would have been done at once. and the law may not be retrospective.

technology is an evolving scene. it takes time to evaluate a change. and corporate time is... corporate time. it moves so fast, time seems to dilate..

Clearly, Mitsubishi knows that their AT design is causing this. why are the Forts, the Everests, the Hyundai CRDi not reporting SUA cases. That's bec their AT designs are as common as traditional ATs.

The problem is human error. Though we can always blame the stupid driver after every case, We can't deny that the Miontero is a hotcake vehicle - anyone can have it, even the most novice of drivers

This is an accident waiting to happen again and again simply because People are used to the depressing a pedal (in Montero you don't need to) before shifting to D, or particularly the 2009-2012 models. Those pictures with Mitsu running thru a wall and almost destroying it, demonstrates how beast of a diesel torque Diesel SUVs are. What if it's a kid or a person in front, or what if a Mitsu employee or a kin a Mitsu exec who's in front of a daydreaming Montero driver about to leave a parking lot?

Yan kasi ang problema. In our society, Mitsubishi shouldn't hide in Car Manuals or an engineering design. . Dapat mating proactive sila for the safety of the public. They did siguro in models 2013 up (which btw, reveals that they knew the design is the one causing it) pero those 2009 to 2012 models are out there. in the end it's not about the erring driver, it's about innocent lives & limbs na pwede maapektuhan into

We have the 2013 Pajero, I immediately checked the AT system of our Pajero if similar sa Montero. it has a switch in the lever before shifting to D?

I have yet to test today if it will shift without depressing the brake pedal (naka park kasi with a wall in the front ngaun). Pero now that I understood why on,y Mitsu are reporting most of the SUA cases here, I will inform our driver and my family na Ganito din pala ang Pajero (after my test) and Baka makasakit kami sa future. I will tell them that whenever you re gonna drive the Pajero , remember the different AT design of Mitsus

Yun pa naman isang sister ko, pag nakabili ng damit sa mall, naging lutang ang Uta for a time,

my cheap minicar won't get out of "P" if i don't step on the brake pedal. (palakpak!)
my cheap minicar won't allow me to pull out the key, if i don't put it in "P" first! say goodbye to "urong-sulong" in crowded parking lots... (whine...)

So I tested it na (imagine testing it at lunch time 12 noon lol, ang iniit grabe!)

The 2013 Pajero has another switch in the shift knob before you can shift to any othe position.

For the switch to work, I need to press the brake pedal first. So there are 3 steps

    1. Press the brake pedal
    2. press the switch in the shift knob
    3. While both are pressed, that's the only time the shift knob will shift or will work

That's good safety feature but this is the 2013 Pajero when Mitsu changed their 2013 Montero as well. Dunno about older model Pajeros

    -----

And so I simulated what could happen if I wrongly pressed the accelerator pedal then press the switch and force the the shift knob (in an open area in our village), It won't budge. Because even if I am revving the engine, the switch will not work! So maybe I simulated an SUA na siguro na dito

    ----

Now here's a disturbing thing that I found out. I tested our Hyundai Sta Fe too. I'm used to pressing the brake pedal before shifting from P to D. Do take note that the Hyundai Sta Fe has no additional switch feature in the shift knob.

And so I didn't press the brake pedal and went ahead with just shifting from P to D. it worked! Wow I never realized this until now, so no brakes and I was able to shift. Meaning the sta Fe AT has the same design as the 2009 to 2012 AT Monteros.

Thinking that our Sta Fe is a candidate for SUA cases, I simulated an SUA (in a a safe open area of course)

I revved the engine first and while pressed, forced shifting the AT from P to D. It didn't move forward. I had to release the accelerator first, then press it again for the vehicle to move forward. Take note that it didn't jump forward or I didn't experience any sudden acceleration. I did this 5 times just to be sure.

So what can I conclude. I don't know really other than maybe the Hyundai CRDi is a crossover and not a truck like a Montero that needs high torque even from a starting position,

Why did I say this, I've driven the 4D56 L300 too. This vehicle jumps almost a meter when I accidentally start it while not in neutral (1st gear). Sabi ko nga kung may morse sa haran ko ba nga yun
