March 19th, 2010 02:11 AM #37Mitsu Dealers Exceed First Month Sales Goal with Over 5000 ASX Orders
March 17, 2010

Mitsubishi's 2011 ASX (Outlander Sport in the U.S.) barely hit Japanese dealerships on February 17th and already its making quite a sales splash. Officials first hoped to sell 1500 units monthly, but have already logged 5169 orders.

The ASX is cute, compact, and fuel efficient, and can be outfitted with four-wheel drive or a CVT -- all very attractive features. A Japanese tax break on small, gas-sipping cars has also helped the ASX out some.

Of the orders, 75 percent are of the highest "G" specification with wide-angle HID headlights and push button start. Middle of the road "M" spec garnered 18 percent of buyers, while entry-level "E" spec got 7 percent.

The U.S.-grade Outlander Sport will come standard with a 2.0-liter MIVEC four-cylinder. It'll hit dealerships this fall and is set to debut at the New York Auto Show later this month. Other than that, most specifications are still under wraps, but stay tuned for more.

Given its popularity with a variety of buyers in Japan (many of whom downsized from luxury SUVs and large sedans), will the 2011 Outlander Sport be a sales hit in the U.S.?
