practical gifts nowadays, include common items in the house or office...
hindi na uso yung gifts na nakikita sa "gifts corner" sa stores... some of which turn out to be virtual whyte elephants, to be re-cycled or passed on to other un-suspecting gift recipients thru the years...

Omg I feel the same. I don't drink wine pa. I can't believe I'm saying this but I now prefer fruit cake hehehe.

at least wine has a longer shelf life

still better than those years when everyone was just giving away mugs and tumblers

some years back, a popular item was this multi-function kutsara. it was so popular, every other exchange-gift participant got one. but in truth, i never saw anyone actually use it for eating.
ice above, confessed to having received three phone stands that he didn't even take out of the box.
years ago, i got a nightstick-size maglite... it was missing a part, rendering it useless as an illuminating tool..

    previous gifts that we gave,
usb-powered electric fans, emergency lights for brownouts, 18650-powered personal electric fans (for Worship Day! heh heh.), plastic face mask cases, plasticware, auto tools, UV sanitizers, LED household bulbs, plumber's friend, bath towels, socks! ...

gifts that we received that seemed strange at first, but proved useful eventually,
faucets, electric massage tools, blenders (housing and whirling blades only! no food container!), small alligator jack, rachet set, laser pointer, ice pick (hey! stainless!), ice trays, kitchen wipe stand/dispenser, nylon rope for sampayan, clothes hamper, a bulb-changer gadget! ... ordinary, everyday items that we would need to buy at one time of another...

but the cheap wine outlasts the fruit cake in the storage cabinet.

some time back, we bought danish-style cookies from online seller.
well, the cookies tasted bleh, and they were broken into pieces. either binalibag yung lata, o sinabugan nang granada yung container van.
    nevair again.
the ones in the mall... well... we tried. hindi nga basag, lasang bleh pa rin.
so i wonder, where can we source the real high quality ones of olde?

we are not oenophiles, but the novellino gets our nod.
also, Mompo Mass Wine is surprisingly good. i would brave to say, "it's about halfway to cognac".

our basic guideline when giving gifts (but there are always exceptions),
"would we be happy, receiving such gift?"

I normally give chocolates/cookies to my colleagues and neighbors.

I received 3 phone stands last year - I didn't even take them out of their boxes.
    5 plants - only 2 are left

I feel na with chocolates and cookies, they can eat it tapos gone from their lives forever.
