The engine is weak on paper, but in practice, it's actually pretty good. Punchy, torquey and sounds great.
For those who have been waiting:
Mazda2 vs. Honda Jazz
We’ve been here before.
Mazda has a car that’s a wallflower. Good in its own way, but overshadowed by newer, flashier and more mainstream opposition. They give it a facelift. A redesign. It still doesn’t work. Then they do something radical: they throw out the old car and and build an entirely new one from the ground up.
This started with the 626 -> Mazda6 metamorphosis, followed by 323 -> Mazda3. Now, they’ve gone all the way down to the dinky little Demio, giving us the Mazda2. Okay, the Demio was already rebadged as the Mazda2 when Mazda revamped its line-up, but that car wasn’t as deserving of the “Zoom zoom” moniker as the rest of the range.
This one is.
In the end, the Mazda2 is a solid alternative to the Honda. However, lacking the incredible cargo and passenger capacity of the Jazz, that’s all it will ever be, an alternative. But for those looking to spice up their lives with a small, practical car with stunning looks that’s also tremendous fun to drive, the Mazda2 fits the bill better than any car since the original Jazz....but if you're more after driving fun than van-like space, there's lots to like about the Mazda2. ;)

*Type100: I tried to figure out if the purported instability under braking was there... couldn't elicit it. The only time I could get the rear end to step out was in very hard cornering, but it was gradual and the rear tires bit again right after and held their line. No fishtailing or anything. Acted just like a Gen 1 MMC Jazz 1.5, actually.
It does feels twitchy under hard braking, probably because the tires have so much bite and the rear end is so light... but before anything can happen, the rear tires lose traction, the rear drums lock up and the ABS smooths braking out... allowing the car to settle again. Probably could use less rear brake bias or rear disc brakes... but it's not a big issue.
Of course, I don't want to risk my neck and the car doing an incredibly dangerous hard braking and swerving test ala Best Motoring. In any ABS equipped car without ESP, the sudden bite of steering when ABS engages can cause the car to veer wildly if it cycles on suddenly after the front tires start sliding. While ESP is available on the Mazda2, we don't get it locally. And unless the Dunlops are total crap in the rain, we don't need it.Last edited by niky; February 2nd, 2010 at 12:47 AM.

That's good to know then.
Great review too.
I tried to look for that Best Motoring episode I was talking about (with the 2/Demio failing the ELC test) and I think it was the November 2008 one. Haven't been able to confirm it from home because of shoddy Internet access, however.
If you got the time and interest, PM me for details of that episode.
