July 19th, 2012 01:21 AM #11oj88 is right. On the 99 Civic, 2008 Civic, and probably all Hondas, D is 1-2-3-4 and 5 if applicable, D3 is 1-2-3, 2 is just 2 (even from standstill), 1/L is 1
however, on other cars like Nissan, the 2 position is 1-2. Starts from 1 and shifts up to 2 only. There is an overdrive button which is pretty much like Honda's D3

Doesn't seem that way. On any of the Nissan owner's manual I've read, "2" is just 2nd gear, the same as "1" being first gear. They don't shift up or down.

July 22nd, 2012 01:02 AM #15On the Patrol and the Serena, when I put the shifter in 2, and set off from zero, the car would start off in first gear, then shift to second. In the Honda, you can tell it's in second because it feels significantly slower when starting from zero. But in the Nissans, at least the Patrol and Serena, the 2 position allows the car to shift from 1st until 2nd only. I'm pretty sure about it. Maybe it's different per model.
