i believe cyclist are considered as pedestrian as well.

hello mga sirs. i understand all your sentiments. i drive and i race bikes, too.
sa mga kapwa ko siklista, we will have to understand that the thread generally talks about the common folk who use their bikes to commute. eto yung mga typical na makikita mong naglipana (at madalas nagkakarerahan) sa kalsada ng past 5PM onwards -uwian na kasi hehe- kaya huwag sasama ang loob natin.
if you look at it objectively, it doesn't make any difference if you're on a P1000 bmx bike or a P500,000 road bike, hindi kahirapan ang issue. the problem lies mainly on education and awareness. not to discriminate but more often than not, those who are at the lower end ang hindi 'educated' sa road rules and etiquette, and the risks involved when riding their bikes. if they were, then sure enough you'd see more of them sporting protective gear and religiously following road rules.
accidents between vehicles and bikes ALWAYS happen because one or both of those involved do not understand the other one's perspective while they are on the road. si driver akala ganito, si biker ang akala ganyan. if you are both aware, then it is highly unlikely na maaksidente kayo sa isa't isa.
ang problema, before you can drive, you need to pass a test to acquire a license, while sa bike, bili lang tapos bike to sawa ka na. i'm not saying na kasalanan ng bikers, but the lack of regulations (for both cars and bikes) make it risky for both divers and cyclists. we can't simply rely on common sense because it is obviously not so common these days. sa qc circle, may bike lane, pero meron bang oras na hindi ito dinaanan ng sasakyan? sa marikina, kailan ba hindi naparadahan ng sasakyan ang bike paths?
there are some bike advocates who have come up with projects for bike commuters to increase their awareness of safety and road regulations. they have also been providing helmets and night gears for these people after educating them about the importance of protective gear. but these advocacies can only do so much.
currently, there is no national law governing the use of bicycles. so until the day comes that cyclists are required to take and pass proficiency tests on road safety before they can ride their bikes on public roads (pabor ako dito btw), i suggest we learn to live with them in the meantime. i know this will not make it right, but it will lessen the risks for everyone, or at least those reading this thread.
i'll probably get replies arguing that bikes should be banned on the road instead, but hey, let's all be realistic, masarap lang isipin pero malayong mangyari.
pax et bonum!
p.s. sorry po but, technically, bikers/cyclists are not considered pedestrians. you're only a pedestrian if you're travelling on foot. that's the reason why cyclists should be dismounting their bikes when crossing pedestrian lanes.

October 2nd, 2010 02:39 PM #26i have a bad experience with one bicycle rider.
i was waiting for the light to turn green on pureza going eastward. i was on the innermost lane. when the light turned green and as i started to accelerate, a bicyle loaded with an LPG tank crossed my path. good thing i was not moving fast yet. the pedal of his bike scraped my bumper. the moron just just pedalled away as if nothing happened.
di ko na hinabol at kakamutan lang naman ako ng ulo. my point is, these people are just nuisance on the road.

Parang bawal din sila sa national roads at highways. Still nag bike diyan sila. naka full gear pa so hindi ito "low income" bikers. Maybe we should post photos here.
Sometime ago (maybe 10 years) a tour of luzon champion got killed in EDSA-Cubao in front of Farmers while riding his bike. Alam naman natin kung gaano ka walang disiplina mga bus duon. The lesson was fatal and i guess his last.
Walang pinagkaiba sa unsafe motorcyclist at unsafe drivers at hard headed pedestrians.......
they are courting with death and they bring it to the rest of us.

Lumalabas lang na pag naka kita ka ng bike dapat ikaw ang maging maingat sa pag iwas ano man mangyari mabanga mo man ito kadalasan iyong naka sasakyan pa rin ang mali.

October 2nd, 2010 10:09 PM #30cguro if the Law was changed that if you hit a pasaway pedestrian or biker, its not your fault if your just driving normally on the highway, then maybe the pedestrians or bikers would think twice bout riding on highways where traffic is fast moving.
but as of now. if your in a car and a drunk guy suddenly crossed your path.. the car driver is at fault even if technically its not..
kaya the mind set of filipino pedestrians is, may compensation naman.. so ok lang.
