It doesn't matter if it's a physical shifter, knob, or button. There is still a dedicated "Park" mode wherein the transmission stops transmitting power and sets the parking pawl. It is a mode that must be manually engaged or disengaged by the driver.
Just splitting hairs to say that the auto-hold does not put the transmission in Park. It just applies the brakes.
Exceptions to the rule may apply to say, cars with various degrees of self-driving capabilities and EVs. They most often don't have an actual transmission so the actual brakes on each wheel works as a replacement for the parking pawl.Last edited by oj88; November 29th, 2024 at 11:08 AM.

it seems (atleast from what i've read) to be the opposite situation to the vinfast VF3's park gear being emulated as neutral in Toyota's system has the ICE being mechanically engaged still to the two motors (and drive wheels) and relies on the Regen Motor(MG1) to be the path of least resistance by having both motors turned off. Having the Brakes in Drive or parking pawl engaged allows the MG1 to apply a load without risking the vehicle moving forwards.

NGFT sets the tranny to neutral when auto hold engages but the selector stays on D. There is a bit of a delay when the gas is pressed to resume driving. Expect a lot more delay if the start/stop is engaged. Caught me off guard a few times especially on uphill stops.
XForce remains in D. The car jerks forward when the compressor engages whether on auto hold or just manually stepping on the brakes. Parking brake is engaged automatically if on auto hold for more than a minute (I think). This can startle the driver because it jerks forward when it disengages the hold and engages the parking brake.
IIRC the XV also stays on D but there's no jerking. There is a noticeable movement in the brake pedal to indicate that auto hold is engaged.Last edited by JohnM; November 29th, 2024 at 12:11 PM.
