It's a bull**** generalization. Mazdas aren't any worse than your common Japanese car.
It all boils down to the specific engine and chassis. Lots of long term ranger owners with the non-CRDi version of these engines who've had no problems whatsoever.
The ride of the current Everest is a strange mix of "matagtag" and "malambot", but that's from doing a review on the 2.5... I don't know about the 3.0. It's probably just down to the shock specifications. Whether it's better than the Fortuner depends on your tastes... but I can tell you this... the engine itself is much better.

I have a friend who rode with me today in my everest. He's the kind of guy who's not really a tsikoter by heart, if you know what I mean. Vehicles are just there to take you from point A to point B. Well, his comment exactly was, "malayong mas komportable ito kesa sa fortuner. Yung fortuner eh matagtag at nakakahilo (while gesturing a wave-like pattern with his hand)".
And true, the ford/mazda engine is much better.
I don't know which ride is more comfortable coz I haven't test driven an alterra (didn't really consider buying one). The everest engine is more powerful but the alterra engine consumes less fuel.
Regarding mazda engine reputation, my dad used to have a B2200 as a service vehicle. Boy, it was very durable. He would ply bicol about once or twice a week and never had problems.
You seem to have many questions regarding the everest. Are you planning to purchase one? If you do, compare it with the rest by test-driving them (unfortunately, fortuners don't have test drive vehicles, mautak ang toyota). Other people's tastes could be different from yours.

I guess he's never heard of the legendary 4jx-1.
No complaints on the toyota 2.5 li D4D. Refined, and outruns most non-CRDi diesel vehicles... But you get smoked by other new diesel vehicle.
Just wondering, are there any cases of cracked cylinder heads on the duratorq?

Haven't heard of any, yet... but it can happen if you let the engine overheat.
Diesels aren't indestructible. I've friends who do rentals, and I've heard of overhauled engines from Toyota, Mitsubishi and Nissan... nothing is foolproof... you have to take care of it.
The one big issue right now with the Alterra engine is its ability to deal with local fuel. I'm slowly getting confirmation of the stories regarding the gaskets around the injectors. Apparently, they're sensitive to fuel quality, and can degrade. I'm trying to find an owner who can provide me with a letter from Isuzu now. This is eerily like the o-ring problem that cursed the 4JX1 trooper.
The Alterra reportedly rides much better... it's softer, out and out. And yes, despite possible issues with fuel, the Isuzu engines are really pretty fuel efficient compared to others. Most CRDi engines (like in the Eve and Fort) aren't very fuel efficient.

Kaya nga... I'm still gathering info. Mahirap mag-rely sa "sabi-sabi"... and it could be due to the early Euro II fuel, which lacked lubricity and also caused problems for the Toyota D4Ds.
Because it might just be a garbled story regarding the Isuzu Trooper, whose famous O-ring problems Isuzu is actively trying to rectify.
