White Lies Women Tell Men

Everyone lies. In fact, if anyone tells you that he or she doesn’t, well, that’s a lie, too. According to a study published in the Journal of Basic & Applied Psychology, people tell an average of about two to three white lies every ten minutes. What’s more, a study conducted in Britain found that men tell about 1,092 lies a year, compared to women who tell about 728 fibs.

While men and women are both guilty of being real-life Pinocchios, it’s interesting to know how their fibs differ. Men mostly tell lies to make them look good. Women, on the other hand, mostly tell them to spare hurting others, or to make others feel better.

Here’s a run down of the top X white lies—those are seemingly harmless ones—that women tell men.

Their ***ual history.
No matter how ***ually liberated our society is, many women still believe that there’s a double standard when it comes to the thickness of one’s little black book. Two studies conducted at separate times at Ohio State University found that both men and women lie about their ***ual behaviors to match gender expectations. In the first study (conducted in 2003), women in the study added more years to when they actually lost their virginity, and downscaled the number of men they’ve slept with. In the second (conducted this year), half the respondents were told they were being hooked up to a working lie detector test. The ones hooked up to the lie detector divulged that they have had as many ***ual partners as men, while those who weren’t connected to the lie detector still gave a lower number.

How great the *** was.
It’s natural for women to not want to hurt anyone’s feelings—so why ruin the party by telling a guy that he wasn’t exactly a god in the sack? Oftentimes, women who are in long-term relationships also believe that *** is only a part of their man, that it can be overlooked if he’s great at other stuff (like cooking, or making her laugh.)

Her weight.
There are moments when women feel the need to lie in order to make themselves feel good—and nothing can make her feel worse than watching numbers fly by on a weighing scale. A 2011 survey found that around 70% of women in the Unites States lie about their weight. Women in Britain do the same, with about 2/3 of survey respondents shaving off an average of nine pounds on paper. The reason? In our celebrity-driven culture, women feel compelled to have the same weight as slim, often-underweight stars.

“I had a wonderful time!”, “I’ll be extremely busy this weekend,” “Sure, I’ll call you.”
Women don’t want to be heartbreakers. So instead of telling men “I’d rather wade through flood waters than spend ten minutes with you,” women will most likely make up an excuse before going out of her way to avoid him.

How she loves his friends.
Girlfriends and wives don’t like being perceived as the “clingy, possessive” type. Drinks out with the guys? Have a good time! Call of Duty gaming party? Don’t forget the beer! While women usually don’t have a problem with their man’s friends, well…they do. They do have a problem. Especially with the irresponsible, chauvinistic, rowdy, and deadbeat ones. But since women want to appear accommodating and understanding, they’ll suck it up and smile through the beer belching, ***ist comments, and stories of one-night stands.

“Nothing’s wrong. I’m fine.”
No, she is not fine. Why? It could be because of work. Or family. Or friends. Or maybe, even her man. Will she tell her man? Of course not. Why? Because men are supposed to be mind readers and figure it out themselves. Is it unfair? Well, yes. So deal with it.
