Banks' Overnight Deposits With ECB Hit 2011 High

FRANKFURT -- Euro-zone banks' overnight deposits with the European Central Bank hit a new 2011 high Friday, a sign of rising market uncertainty.

The amount exceeded levels seen in early August when worries on markets mounted over Spanish and Italian sovereign debt.

Banks deposited EUR151.097 billion with the ECB Friday, the ECB said Monday, up sharply from EUR120.956 billion Thursday and also up from the previous 2011 peak of EUR145.217 billionAug. 8.

FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- Euro-zone banks' overnight deposits at the European Central Bank rose to a fresh 2011 high Monday, indicating rising fears that the currency bloc's sovereign debt crisis could deepen.

Banks deposited EUR166.848 billion at the ECB, the ECB said Tuesday, up from the previous 2011 peak of EUR151.097 billion recorded Friday.

A level above EUR100 billon signals market uncertainty, indicating that banks prefer to park their money with the ECB instead of lending it to one another.

Relax lang... Up or down stock market the overall direction of GOLD is UP!!! The CHF's peg also contributed to negative sentiments towards GOLD in the short term but nothing has changed...
