Speculators cut NYMEX oil net longs -CFTC
Fri Apr 15, 2011 8:35pm BST
NEW YORK, April 15 (Reuters) - Money managers cut their
net-long crude futures and options positions in the week to
Apr. 12, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission said on
Friday.
The speculator group cut its net long positions by 23,718
positions to 281,579 from 305,297 in the previous week, as
NYMEX oil futures prices CLc1 fell to close at $106.25 a
barrel on Apr. 12 from $108.34 a barrel on April 5.
U.S. cash crude - Grades mixed in cautious trade
HOUSTON, April 15 (Reuters) - Light Louisiana Sweet LLS- gained and Mars MRS- lost Friday as volatility in futures, on which cash prices are based, made traders cautious.
LLS dealt 20 cents stronger at $17.90 a barrel over West Texas Intermediate CLc1. Mars sour MRS- was up 15 cents early but ended weaker at $10.25 versus $10.35 over on Thursday.
With May Brent having expired Thursday, the June WTI-Brent spread CL-LCO1=R moved to just over $13 in favor of Brent from as wide as $16.40 Thursday.
The arb narrowing should have weighed on cash crudes, which compete with imports priced against Brent, but the effect was muted because traders were holding back or already done for May.
"Not much is happening," said independent trading consultant John Troland. "With futures back up $3 after being down sharply, traders are holding back due to volatility."
May WTI expires Tuesday, and many physical traders are done or nearly done for the month. Those still in the market have to pay up to close gaps in their monthly slates.
"I think people are perhaps topping out of the sour barrels, and sweeter quality is in demand more," a trader said, noting the loss of Libyan crude redirecting world light sweets.
May WTI CLK1 settled up $1.55 at $109.66 a barrel. June Brent LCOM1 ended up $1.45 at $123.45. The June WTI-Brent spread finished the regular trading day at $13.79 in favor of Brent.
