There are people who are really good at screwing up.
Kahit bigyan mo pa ng opportunity para umasenso, they will always find a way to screw up.
That's the case with lottery winners who eventually lose everything...
or OFW dependents who are given capital to start small businesses pero wala nangyari

Pinoys look to lotteries and jueteng and wowowee etc coz that's where they see hope in getting out of poverty.
There are so few opportunities here to get out of poverty that people dont see hope in anything else.
Maybe other than in working abroad...
which is why so many people are taking up nursing...
Which is how SM thrives --- OFW remittances --- OFW dependents here with disposable income go shopping...

August 9th, 2007 06:44 PM #15The government should focus not just in sending OFW but to attract investors and not only in call centers but in other industry as well. To alleviate the poor you should also offer employment opportunity to high schools and vocational grads call center cater only college graduates. also the salary of nurses and teachers
should also increase in our local hospitals and both public and private so they will no longer seek to work abroad. Right now nursing education has been commercialized by a lot of college and university, with a big advertisement of an american dream.

government must reduce the cost of living in the Philippines......i.e. reduce electricity costs and minimize red tape and graft and corruption (factored among the costs of doing business) to lessen the costs of producing goods and services in the country....
These will reduce the pressure of increasing the wages/ income which in turn is inflationary........
Food is cheap in other countries like the US because of farm subsidies given by the federal Government to farmers.....
Bakit di natin ginagawa rito.......

Hmmm. I thought the whole idea of subsidies is to buoy up farmers so they don't go under because of the low prices. The prices are low to begin with due to overproduction with huge surplus in storage. American farms tend to be very productive.
What you're saying is quite different.Last edited by Jun aka Pekto; August 9th, 2007 at 08:02 PM.

Says who? A lot of poor people do want to work... which is why government relocation and housing programs often fail, simply because there aren't enough employment opportunities near the housing programs to support the people who are moved there.
Tell that to all the women doing domestic labor locally, or to the men waiting in line for jobs at employment offices.
Nobody wants to be poor. Yes, there are lots of men who waste their lives drinking on the corners, or lounging on the streets, but they can only get away with that because they have wives who provide for them (Filipina Martyr Syndrome...), but there are lots of poor people looking for a job... any job.
