I believe it's because not everyone has the money to buy a separate "fun" car. So they would want their practical SUV to also be their weekend machine.
Also, there's nothing wrong with wanting a utility vehicle to also be fun to drive. I appreciate my Ranger much more than I would if I bought a Strada because of the former's better handling - better brakes, more feedback from the steering, less body roll, and more grip.

i totally understand what you're saying and that there are suv that will handle and brake better and has more power than others. what i don't like is those people bragging that their suv has xxx top speed or they were able to take a curve at a certain speed. heck most of the time when people here ask which has more power people would say their suv went xxxkm/h as if top speed is everything to a car.
compared to fortune and it's pick up counter parts yes it is, the only ladder frame suspension that handles better than the montero is the tbz.

Nope.
The Fortuner handles better. Faster steering. More stability. Just not as much grip.
The Everest, strangely, handles better. Stiffer suspension, better tires, keen steering. Not much lateral axle control, but 18" wheels make up for a lot of sins.
The Trailblazer is about equal. Quicker steering, but body roll and understeer. Feels a bit more sure-footed. The problem is the electric steering rack is very numb.
The Montero Sport has much body roll, poor wheel control and very, very, very slow steering. About four-turns lock-to-lock. It's not bad stability-wise, but the slow steering makes it pretty dull on a tight and twisty road.
The Alterra is the class boat. It has more body roll, less grip and steering that is just as slow. But then, nobody ever claimed the Alterra was sporty.Still a good cruiser, because it's so soft.
This is mostly from slalom testing, however. I've driven all of these on the road, but not back-to-back...Last edited by niky; March 17th, 2014 at 09:06 PM.

March 17th, 2014 09:45 PM #17Oh, but I find them all quite excellent handlers compared to the Trooper.
Anybody remember how it drives? Power was abundant, class leading even, during it's time. In fact, I'm sure it can still give many current SUVs a run for their money in the perfomance department. Ride comfort was great for an SUV. If the Alterra's handling is already boat-like, I don't know what class this is. Steering, though pretty light, takes about five turns to lock and body roll is absolutely horrible. You'd think the car was going to tip over almost everytime you turn!

Well, granted, compared to older trucks, yes, the Montero is quite good. Doesn't feel like it's going to kill you as much as an old Pajero or the Trooper would.
Forgot one thing... the Fortuner, when it was new on the market (and very, very stiff), had that nasty habit of having front and rear suspensions out of sync. The front end would give you false confidence, while the rear would be skittering on the edge of oversteer. Little wonder that we had so many high speed accidents in the first few years it was on the road.

An suv that is slow is not a sports utility vehicle, slow utility vehicle lang yun. Even if it looks like one. Kasi kung looks lang ang basehan e suv na din ang isuzu crosswind, montero sport tci, at alterra (bolahin nyo lelang nyo, parang si binay masa lang ang kayang bolahin!) It has to have all the requirements present - ride and comfort, speed on tarmac and power on dirt and gravel.
Parang sports din, ang basketball at football e sports. Ang chess hindi.
