Unless he takes relatively bad roads or has a chance of getting flooded often then a slightly used SUV may be worth looking for. Also, if he has the time and resources to do minor repair works here and there and source parts, etc. then getting a second hand may be worth his while. Otherwise, go brand new.
On a related note, i just found out recently that we still have a pending warranty claim on a 2009 Tucson. The power window switch has been "under order" for nearly a year.
