if the locals were to produce the quality equivalent of... say... an Isuzu Crosswind, it would cost the locals 2 or 3X more than it costs for Isuzu Phils. to produce one

coz the locals don't have what the Japanese assemblers have -- economies of scale

the locals are stuck

either they produce something ugly and cheap (which nobody will buy)

or they produce something really good but too expensive (which also nobody will buy)

Exactly, yet the advocates and their can't see those simple facts.

Any businessman worth his business cards would know that.
