A radiator top is a release valve for excess heat and pressure. If the radiator doesn't give way, it's possible the head gasket could. And that'd be a more expensive problem than a cracked radiator.

I thought its the radiator's cap job to release excess pressure?

vitara bro.,yung may ist owner ang nag drive.faulty thermostat plus sira yung temperature gauge kaya hinde nya alam nag overheat na pala.the oem rad eventually crack after ayear of that incident(no overheating),we`re using now evercool radiator mas cooler siya compared sa oem radiator.
