Volvo prods fuel-friendly start/stop technology into production
Words by Christopher Kho

In their relentless effort to cut dependence on fossil fuels, the Volvo Car Corporation will finally begin fitting in their fuel-cutting start/stop technology onto production starting September of 2011. With this tech, Volvo claims to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 10g/km and reduce fuel consumption by about 0.4 liters per 100km, thus blazing the way for a greener future.

For a brand that relies on plug-in electrics rather than hybrids, it looks like Volvo's tackling the gas guzzling problem in a very unique way. The start/stop system is programmed to shut the engine off when the car grinds to a standstill, while an electric pump maintains oil pressure in the gearbox. It works by using feedback from brake pressure to tell when to stop and start the engine. I just hope that it keeps the A/C running while you sit in traffic under the hot sun.
