October 30th, 2014 03:41 PM #4It could be the float. But once it happens, your engine will definitely stall. But based on your description above, you're still running, which means your carb's not yet overflowing. I suggest you remove the air cleaner then start your car, and look closely where the leaking gas comes from. Check all fuel lines connected to the carb, specially the fittings and fuel hoses. Check also the sections of the carb, specially the gasket connected areas. If there's a sign of gas, then the gasket should be replaced.

December 3rd, 2014 11:15 PM #6the air-cooled beetle's carburator is notorious for causing leaks and fires.. because, and you said it, it is located over the distributor.
problems could be in the float adjustment, and/or in the poor condition of the gasket. both are easy to fix.
or, the carb top is already deformed by excessive tightening of the screws..
a perished and leaking fuel hose (as it inserts over the carb inlet tube) is also to blame sometimes.
either way, they are signs of a neglected beetle.. heh heh.
good luck.
