July 1st, 2004 07:34 PM #1ano ba ung advantage kung mas maraming increments sa gears? i.e. why is a 5speed better thana 4speed model?

more gears like 5 or 6 six gear boxes help keep the engine's rpm at the power band when shifting between gears. If you use a 4 speed gear box with an engine designed for six, you might find yourself always below the optimum rpm everytime you shift between gears.
Also more higher gears helps to keep your fuel milage up.

also, more gears makes shifting smoother dahil mas malapit na ang spacing ng each gear.

6-speed boxes are designed primarily for high-revving engines with narrow power bands (classic example: Honda S2000 2.0L). a high-torque engine with a very wide power band (the classic examples being Corvette V8's and Viper V10's) doesn't really need many gears.
the disadvantage of having more gears is that the gearbox is physically larger. it's also more tiresome to shift around town.

July 2nd, 2004 08:24 AM #5someone once told me that those really big rigs/trailer trucks have about 16+ gears or so....totoo ba, or nauto lang ako?

yup... its true, they have a primary and secondary gear box. Primary egar box selects LOW or HIGH and the secondary selects around 5 to 6 gears. Multiply them and you get 10 to 12 (or more) gears.
Something like a mountain bike's gearing.

simply put, more gears means optimal engine speeds at a wider variety of road speeds.

July 8th, 2004 09:25 AM #9hmmm, wonder if anyone has come up with a trailer truck na A/T...imho kc it would make sense, 'coz the bigger the vehicle, the more risky it is to slide down an incline if you're not that nimble with the pedals

Some Volvo tractor heads came out with AT models. Yung mga nakikita nyong humihila ng Shell petroleum products. At naka-aircon pa sila! :D
