To refresh your memories, this is the current (global) Yaris.

The rear looks like when Toyota Matrix is inspired of the Nissan 370Z. Less tall-boy looking, too. Much like a Vios hatch now.

I believe that's what the Chinese Yaris is, its a Vios hatch, the doorskins are the same, this only means its riding on the slightly longer wheelbase of the Vios sedan.

The big question is..... why do they need the extra rear legroom on these Chinese specific models?

The Chinese Yaris is a hatchback version of the Vios.

Space is synonymous to luxury in China. Explains why you can have a LWB versions even on entry luxury models such as BMW 3 series, Infiniti G series etc.

Perhaps its also a popular dating place for them? Lol

It makes sense for luxury cars, but i'm odd when they also have to make longer/larger versions of B-segment cars.

Looks like the reason they didn't launch the new small Yaris in ASEAN is because they were waiting for the jumbo-sized version.

Toyota held the world premiere of the new Yaris subcompact hatchback at the 2013 Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition. Displayed alongside the hatchback, was the recently unveiled Vios, both models are production versions of the Dear Qin global strategic concepts the Japanese automaker displayed in last year’s Beijing Motor Show.
The new Yaris will be released in the Philippines by next year. And our source within Toyota Motor Philippines was quick to point out that the local release will not come with the silver bumper highlight.
