November 23rd, 2013 09:22 PM #3In first game with Rain or Shine, Raymond Almazan gets tough love from coach Yeng Guiao
Coming off a gruelling NCAA finals series as part of the Letran Knights against San Beda last week, Raymond Almazan struggled in his debut game for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the PBA.
The third overall draft pick was scoreless in 14 minutes against Meralco on Friday after being inserted into the regular lineup in favor of veteran Ronnie Matias.
Almazan’s being new to the team didn’t spare him from the fiery temper of his new coach, Yeng Guiao. At one point, when Almazan committed a foul while guarding Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Guiao shouted, “Turuan niyo nga ‘yan!”
The rookie, however, didn’t mind getting a tongue-lashing from Guiao, who is known for his verbal spears at his own players.
“Ni-ready ko na yung sarili ko sa sigaw,” Almazan told InterAKTV. “OK lang yun, part of the game yun. At saka part of growing up yun.”
Almazan admitted he’s still adjusting to the brand of game in the PBA.
“Hindi ko ini-expect na ganito kabigat yung PBA. Paghahandaan ko pa ito talaga. Nag-aadjust pa ako kasi hindi ko pa alam yung mga plays. Hopefully, next game maganda ilalaro ko,” said Almazan.
He got plenty of lessons on Friday as he dealt with Meralco’s physical front court of Cliff Hodge and Reynel Hugnatan. Hodge erased one of Almazan’s shot attempt, while Hugnatan caught him with an elbow that led to a busted lip. Almazan left the game after that and didn’t return.
“Sinabi nga sa akin ni Larry (Rodriguez) and yung ibang big men, kung sa NCAA na-do-dominate mo yung game, dito kahit malaki ka, gagamitan ka nang gagamitan ng experience. Siguro next game mag-i-improve na ako,” said Almazan.
But while he got a taste of Guiao’s fury inside the court, the coach expressed patience with the play of Almazan and fellow rookies Alex Nuyles and Jeric Teng, who also struggled scoring just two points and one point, respectively.
“Our rookies struggled today. They’re still learning the PBA style of play,” said Guiao.
“But I have no doubt they’ll get there.”
