    From Badu Francis Benitez:
Please don't take this against me. Just want to address that phrase " respect my opinion or choice" that I usually see on social media from friends n relatives who do not share the same political preference as mine. Very well said. Let our friendship go beyond politics let us discern to come up with a choice based on wisdom and for the common good.

    "Very good analogy:

“Respect my opinion” is for preferences where only the quality of your life is at stake. Sino ang best Kpop band? Anong lumpia ang top tier? Skinny jeans or elepants? You’re entitled to your opinion. After all, ikaw naman ang tatangkilik, kakain, at magsusuot ng mga ‘yan. Buhay mo yan. Your life, your choice.

Pero pag nakataya na rin ang kapakanan ng kapwa, hindi na pwedeng hindi ka papakialaman sa preference mo. In a room, gusto mo sobrang lamig ng aircon. Try telling the people around you “RESPECT MY OPINION.” Ano sa tingin mo magiging response nila?

Mababaw pa yang mga example na yan. What if we get to collectively choose the pilot of the plane we’re boarding? There are 2 leading applicants. Yung isa, 1st officer (assistant pilot) for the past 6 years. Nagtrabaho ng higit pa sa job description nya, lalo na in times of crisis. Hindi lang sa resume ah. May mga proof. May pictures, videos, news articles ng mga ginawa nya. Yung isang kandidato, anak ng dating piloto. Pero sya, wala talaga syang trabaho for the past 6 years. ‘Di man lang nga nakapagtapos sa aviation school. May records sya ng tax evation at ang pamilya niya ng pagnanakaw at pandarambong. As in convicted ah. Nagpapatay din sila ng maraming tao, pero syempre never niya inamin yon despite the overwhelming historical evidence. By the way, 2x na syang di sumisipot sa job interview. Given these FACTS, sino ang pipiliin NATIN? Sa totoo lang, kahit kapatid ko pa yang 2nd candidate, hindi ko itataya ang buhay ko in a probable plane crash with him in the cabin. Kaw ba?

If you’ll insist na si 2nd candidate ang dapat nating maging piloto, pls back it up with proof that he can land us in our destination safely. Hindi with “ah basta” at “respect my opinion.” Kasi hindi lang ‘to matter of who’s likable and who’s obnoxious for you. This is a matter of national security, jobs that can be lost, billions of pesos that can be used for health care and education if not plundered, human rights, raised taxes, inflation, and the quality of our everyday lives, lalo na in times of crisis. “Respect my opinion” is a lame escape from providing people with FACTS to back up your choice. Pero sige, dahil demokrasya tayo, you get to vote for the candidate you like. But know that your vote is not just a reflection of your “opinion.” It is a direct representation of your values. Of what matters most to you. Of what you believe in. So if you’ll vote for someone whom you know has plundered the country, has never been in real public service for most of his life, who stands by the myth that the Martial Law—when human rights were blatantly violated—was a golden age in our history, then go. You have the right to do so. But don’t dare go to bed peacefully deluding yourself that you are pro-democracy, pro-social justice, pro-meritocracy, and pro-integrity. Vote for that candidate at the expense of your countrymen, but don’t dare look at the mirror with pride, thinking that you did our country a favor.

Will this change your mind about your candidate? No. But I hope this can change the way you think about your “opinions.”"
