Hi sir X_outpost,
Are you using miles per US gallon or miles per imperial gallon (UK measurement)?
Try driving an Isuzu Alterra 3.0 Ddi-iTEQ even when you don't want to (just for the heck of it), and you'll see that it will give you 45.87 miles per US gallon at 80 kph (or 19.5 km per litre) as reported by our own Tsikot member, Niky, who is also a contributor/columnist for the "other" website, TG Philippines, where usually he writes under the Drives section.
This is an excerpt from his review on the Alterra:
ENGINE PERFORMANCE
The 3.0-liter Ddi i-TEQ is tractable, with good midrange torque and a light and sweet shifter and clutch. I had been skeptical of DOE fuel-economy claims for the Alterra, thinking those runs had been done with special techniques or cheats. But after getting up to 19.5 km/L on the highway at 80 kph, I'm a believer. At over 100kph, economy still hovers between 14km/L and 15km/L. And despite heavy traffic, our in-city economy ranged between 8.5 km/L and 10 km/L, and combined economy between 11.5 km/L and 14 km/L. That's impressive, any way you cut it.
The Department of Energy in 2008, reported around 19.44 km per litre for the Alterra 3.0-litre diesel, or that is 45.73 miles per US gallon.... Its pickup-version, the D-max, posted even better results at 20.57 km per litre or that is 48.38 miles per US gallon.
For a seven seater and heavy SUV the Alterra is, and with more legroom, it can perhaps match the fuel consumption of the expensively-priced Toyota Prius that even runs on a small engine in combo with an electric motor.... And this is only the 3.0-litre without the VGT that we're comparing with the Prius.... Word has it that the new model Alterra (and D-max) are 5% more fuel efficient that their predecessors....
Just a discussion sir on fuel economy, validated by a reputable car enthusiast and a skeptic and by a government agency, no pun intended....
Cheers!

Hindi tayo nagkakalayo sa results sir. 17.1 km per litre ako from Metro Manila to CWC in Naga City over an almost 430-kilometre distance in summer 2010, and this is passing by the cities, towns and provincial roads where some sections are also uphills....
Wala pa akong Racechip pro 2 sa mga panahon na ito at Petron Diesel Max gamit ko.
Cheers bosing!

Matipid ang Innova D-4D ng tunay sir, as long as cruising speed lang and largely if you're plying in flat roads only most of the time.
Huwag mo lang biritan sa akyatan like going to Baguio along Kennon or Marcos Highway. Malakas lakas kumain ng fuel at mahiyaw ang makina.
