Read in the news that Sen. Mar Roxas is planning to file a resolution to change the name of EDSA to Cory Aquino Avenue.
It's true that we cannot honor Tita Cory enough and we should really name
a thoroughfare after her. But at the same time changing the name of EDSA
would be an act of dishonor toward Epifanio delos Santos, a revered patriot
himself.
Hey Mar, if you're really intent on your "resolution", bakit hindi na lang Roxas
Blvd. ang palitan natin to Cory Aquino Blvd. I have a feeling hindi ka papayag, hehehe!
(N.B. - It seems binawi yata ni Mar yung resolution niya, ibang kalye na lang
ang pagdidiskitahan!)

I think Ortigas ave is named after the original owners... like Ayala Ave.

Times St. would be appropriate to honor Cory. Same thing they did by changing Baleta Drive to Betty Go-Belmonte Ave., the Belmontes lived in that street. Its all Cory hype for now, people just wanting to be associated with her legacy. Looks like the "pussy-foot" Senator backed out after all...Panay kapit kasi kay Tita Cory, kumapit ka na lang kay Korina.
Senator disposes to rename EDSA Cory Ave.
MANILA, Philippines — Is it laban o bawi? (fight or withdraw?)
Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II Friday proposed to change the name of historic EDSA (Epifanio delos Santos Avenue) to “Cory Aquino Avenue” in honor of the memory of the People Power heroine.
But within five hours after his office had put out the press release announcing his proposal and before his idea could fly, the senator, who is running for president in 2010, withdrew it.
By the time Roxas pulled out his proposal at 5:30 p.m., the story had already been posted online. INQUIRER.net put it up at 2:33 p.m., GMA news.tv at 2:38 p.m. and mb.com.ph at 4:59 p.m.
Roxas had apparently changed his mind.
“Please don’t use our press release today on EDSA to be named Cory Aquino Avenue. Please disregard,” said a text sent by Jenny Bugarin, one of the media relations officers of the senator.
“Laban o Bawi” is a game segment in a noontime TV show where a contestant is made to choose between the unknown content of a box—which could be a large sum of money or something insignificant—and sure cash.
Contacted by phone, Bugarin said she didn’t know what prompted the withdrawal of the press release.
The senator could not be reached for comment.
His publicist, Bobby Capco, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer by phone that the Roxas camp was “studying other options.”
“The whole idea to rename a major thoroughfare in honor of Cory will be pursued. And the bill will still be filed on Monday. We’re just studying other options,” Capco said, refusing to elaborate.
Historical concerns
A confidante of Roxas revealed that “other options” referred to other highways, like the North Luzon Expressway, which is close to Aquino’s hometown Tarlac, the Circumferential Road 5 (C-5), or even the Macapagal Avenue in Pasay City.
The confidante, who was not authorized to be quoted on record, said Roxas had to withdraw the idea of renaming EDSA “in view of historical concerns.”
The confidante said that EDSA “has been known internationally as the site of the bloodless People Power revolution. Renaming it will alter history.”
In the withdrawn statement, Roxas had said: “It is but fit to offer in her memory the road that had made her famous all over the world.”
Cory Aquino Day
On Monday, Roxas filed Senate Joint Resolution No. 28 which seeks to declare Jan. 25, the birthday of Aquino, as a “Cory Aquino Day.”
In the proposed resolution, Roxas said the former President, who died after battling colon cancer, deserved to be honored yearly for her crucial role in the revival of democracy in the Philippines.
Roxas said the country should look up to Aquino as “a symbol of the fight against corruption.”Last edited by Monseratto; August 8th, 2009 at 07:36 PM.
